The Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center (Carpenter Center) on the Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) campus will turn into a Hawaiian paradise when the dancers of N\u0101 Lei Hulu I Ka W\u0113kiu perform later this month.<\/p>\n

The dance company, which is making its third appearance at the Carpenter Center, plans to bring 21 dancers and four musicians for the concert celebrating Hawaiian culture, according to a statement from the Carpenter Center.<\/p>\n

“The Honolulu Star Advertiser describes dance school director Patrick Makuakane as ‘a prolific craftsman without boundaries,'” according to the statement. “Makuakane sometimes startles Hawaiian purists with his willingness to mix Hawaiian traditions with newer music, a style called hula mau. This year Gershwin, the Isley Brothers and a traditional 1920s jazz standard will be featured in a set list mostly comprised of traditional Hawaiian songs.”<\/p>\n
