A new museum dedicated to the United States Navy Surface Fleet will be a major part of the Battleship Iowa Museum\u2019s expansion, a project expected to be completed in three phases over the next 11 years, museum officials announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The National Museum of the Surface Navy (NMSN) will be built on the second deck of “The Battleship of the Presidents” with the mission to inform visitors of the fleet’s “important role\u00a0in international relations, free trade, humanitarian assistance and technological innovation.”<\/p>\n
It\u2019s the first national museum dedicated to the Surface Navy\u2014distinct from the Navy’s air and submarine entities\u2014and is expected to open by 2023, according to the announcement.<\/p>\n
\u201cBattleship Iowa serves as a great reminder of the extraordinary things man can do for man,\u201d said Battleship Iowa Museum\u2019s President & CEO Jonathan Williams. \u201cI passionately believe in providing a conduit between the Navy and the civilian communities to build public awareness throughout the world.\u201d<\/p>\n
Museum exhibits and programming will also include educating visitors on Next Generation Science Standards and a Veterans Center offering assistance to military members.<\/p>\n
Moored at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, the entire expansion involves moving Battleship Iowa to the waterfront of the San Pedro Public Market redevelopment in 2021 when the market is expected to be completed.<\/p>\n

Next to the ship, a veterans\u2019 park and outdoor amphitheater will be built to host exhibitions, military services and days of remembrance, including Veterans\u2019 Day and Memorial Day, with an additional 15,000 square feet to be added as exhibit space.<\/p>\n
Another 20,000 square feet of exhibit space will be added below deck and a building on land will provide 20,000 to 50,000-square-feet to be used for transient and ongoing exhibits, theater, classrooms and lecture halls, according to the press material.<\/p>\n
The entire expansion is expected to be completed by 2030.<\/p>\n
