{"id":29647,"date":"2022-04-06T17:21:14","date_gmt":"2022-04-07T00:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000025932"},"modified":"2022-04-06T17:27:49","modified_gmt":"2022-04-07T00:27:49","slug":"washington-long-beach-new-mural-alley-lighting-daycare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/washington-long-beach-new-mural-alley-lighting-daycare","title":{"rendered":"Washington neighborhood welcomes new mural, alley lighting outside daycare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Local groups working in Long Beach\u2019s Washington neighborhood debuted a new mural\u2014along with new solar lighting\u2014Wednesday afternoon in a community celebration that featured live music, a succulent workshop, booths and snacks.<\/p>\n<p>The mural, which faces an alley outside of the\u00a0Long Beach Day Nursery and was painted by local artist Daniel Toledo, depicts two children planting the Earth in a well-tended garden. The message, Toledo said, is that children \u201care the future, and we should take care of our planet now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The work of art came about thanks to Habitat for Humanity for Greater Los Angeles in partnership with the Arts Council for Long Beach. Toledo, commonly known as \u201cMister Toledo,\u201d finished it in four days.<\/p>\n<p>Griselda Suarez, executive director for the Arts Council, said the event was a glimpse into the area&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the mural,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s perfect for the nursery, for the neighborhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with beautifying the area with art, officials hope the lighting component of the project will help make the neighborhood safer.<\/p>\n<p>Dinesa Thomas, vice president of programs at Habitat LA, said the organization pushed for a mural and the installation of about 20 solar lights on Chestnut Avenue from Pacific Coast Highway to 16th Street after a community member had advocated for making the alley safer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000066926\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000066926\" style=\"width: 1600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10000066926\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/06170041\/daycare-mural-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"893\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000066926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A newly installed solar light hovers over a mural outside of the Long Beach Day Nursery in the Washington neighborhood on Wednesday, April 6, 2022. Photo by Crystal Niebla.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAdditional lighting is always a strategy in addressing public safety,\u201d Thomas said, adding that she hopes to get more lights installed if funding opportunities arise.<\/p>\n<p>Toldeo, for his part, is pleased with the partnership. As he worked on the piece, pedestrians passed by, especially moms walking with their children, and praised the artwork. Photo by Crystal Niebla.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve seen murals make a big impact in communities and cities, especially schools, where it helps kids\u2026 be more creative,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Silvia Castellanos, 28, grew up in the Washington neighborhood.
