{"id":30624,"date":"2022-06-11T06:59:16","date_gmt":"2022-06-11T13:59:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000026997"},"modified":"2022-06-11T06:40:10","modified_gmt":"2022-06-11T13:40:10","slug":"dave-van-patten-nft-collection-cloud-machine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/dave-van-patten-nft-collection-cloud-machine","title":{"rendered":"Dave Van Patten, one of Long Beach&#8217;s best known artists, to release NFT collection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Long Beach artist Dave Van Patten\u2014perhaps most well-known for bringing bold and surrealist illustrations to walls of coffee shops, breweries and music venues across the city\u2014is hoping to carve himself a niche in the cryptocurrency digital art frontier with an NFT collection of his own.<\/p>\n<p>For the uninitiated, NFTs\u2014or non-fungible tokens\u2014are unique digital images based on blockchain technology that transformed how creators can own, sell and collect royalties on their creations in the digital world\u2014but more on that later.<\/p>\n<p>Van Patten&#8217;s collection, \u201cCloud Machine,\u201d is a first for the artist and one of his most ambitious projects yet with over 200 unique hand-drawn characters, digitally colored and illustrated on a variety of detailed backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>Just when or how many of the digital collectibles will be released is under wraps, but Van Patten says to expect by summer a \u201clarge collection,\u201d which, by NFT release standards, qualifies anywhere from about five to 10,000 digital images. Like many other collections, \u201cCloud Machine\u201d NFTs are designed to be PFP, or profile picture art, that will mix and match characters and backgrounds, but each image will be unique.<\/p>\n<p>Fans of Van Patten\u2019s colorful and surrealist style will be pleased his NFT art features many of the same strange and sinewy creatures and characters found in his real-life work. In the physical world, they&#8217;ve already graced walls all over Los Angeles County and can be found in children\u2019s books and zines, on hard cider bottles, band posters and CD album covers\u2014including the Grateful Dead (live concert series), WAR, Les Claypool of Primus and many more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000070782\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000070782\" style=\"width: 1110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10000070782 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/09180253\/Alexs_bar_mural_dave_van_patten-1110x635.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"635\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000070782\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dave Van Patten&#8217;s 60-foot mural at Alex&#8217;s Bar in Zaferia was painted in 2017 as part of POW! Photo courtesy Dave Van Patten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited because I\u2019m creating a little universe of different characters and different settings, all of it a little bit surreal or referencing my influences, like retro and sci-fi art, pop culture, nostalgic films and humor,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The collection, Van Patten said, also represents a more refined side of his work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coloring profile is a bit more advanced than a lot of my previous work,\u201d he explained. \u201cI\u2019m doing a lot more shading and just different things. Despite his own interest in the NFT scene early on, he admits he felt a little intimidated embarking on his own project. But as he watched other artists with connections to Long Beach, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.bulletin.com\/jasper-wong-nft\/\">Joshua Wong<\/a>, founder of the global mural art initiative POW! WOW! (now Worldwide Walls) and <a href=\"https:\/\/hypebeast.com\/2022\/1\/tristan-eaton-gemma-nfts\">Tristian Eaton<\/a>, who last year held a solo gallery at the Long Beach Museum of Art, both release their own NFT collections, and with much success, he thought it time to make his own mark. As it turns out, it\u2019s been the most fun he\u2019s had in a long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of late nights and a lot of early mornings. But it doesn\u2019t feel like work,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the first time, I\u2019m creating this whole universe of characters and I can just do whatever the hell I want and it\u2019s really fulfilling and fun. Photo courtesy Dave Van Patten.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been living in Long Beach for about 15 years and one of the first things (in the local art scene) I was exposed to in moving to Long Beach was Dave\u2019s work,\u201d Indich said. \u201cI always thought about Dave\u2019s work and how his work is so perfect for that (the NFT) scene. Specifically his talent and the characters he creates. \u2026 I mean there\u2019s a lot of cool art, but I think he could add a lot to the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For readers who\u2019ve made it this far and are still scratching their heads at what those three little letters mean, all you need to know is that NFTs are sophisticated pieces of computer code\u00a0(known as the blockchain) that designate ownership of something\u2014anything\u2014in the digital space. They could be art, music, videos,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2021\/3\/22\/22344937\/jack-dorsey-nft-sold-first-tweet-ethereum-cryptocurrency-twitter\"> even a tweet<\/a>, and are purchased with cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin. In the case of NFTs it\u2019s usually a cryptocurrency known as Ethereum.<\/p>\n<p>This is important for artists\u2014and is becoming a popular means of income for them\u2014because, for the first time, creators have a way of retaining ownership of their digital art online. This is possible because all NFT tokens and transactions are logged on a public ledger allowing artists perpetual royalties, something that used to be impossible with digital art because anyone can download an image on their computer once it\u2019s been uploaded to the web. That\u2019s not to say people can\u2019t download the NFT art and save it on their computers, but only one person will have the genuine original to buy, sell and own. But as Van Patten embarks on his own digital collection, he\u2019s choosing to honor his roots as a real-world creator. For instance, the name \u201cCloud Machine\u201d is a callback to <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/art\/working-artist-dave-van-patten-rediscovers-creative-passion-in-three-days-of-hell-bent-non-stop-productivity\">past exhibitions<\/a>\u00a0in Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to try and kind of bridge the gap between my past in this project. I\u2019m known in Long Beach for murals and even getting my start doing zines and DIY prints. And obviously, the digital world is quite different from that,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat I\u2019m really trying to do is bridge the gap between the physical and the digital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To accomplish that in an NFT, all the characters and backgrounds will be hand-drawn and arranged by human touch, although the images will be digitally colored.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still holding on to some of the love for DIY prints, but reintroducing that aesthetic into the digital world,\u201d he said. \u201cI think the point is to encourage other artists to do the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since launching the \u201cCloud Machine\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CloudmachineNFT\">Twitter page<\/a> in April, the account clocks over 4,000 followers. Almost daily, Van Patten posts sample images of what his NFT collection might look like. Judging by the flurry of likes, comments and retweets on the art, it&#8217;s generating significant buzz, at least on Twitter, which has become one of the most popular hubs for NFT collectors outside of Discord, an instant messenger social media platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never really thought I would be able to connect so quickly, but a lot of people have shown a lot of love. In 2021, NFTs became a <a href=\"https:\/\/findstack.com\/nft-statistics\/\">$40 billion market.<\/a> That influx of money has also created a gold rush of sorts, with NFTs becoming another part of the volatile crypto market where many traders see a chance to get rich with well-timed buys<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All this attention is very exciting for artists who have struggled to reach new audiences in the real world, said Williams, \u201cCloud Machine\u2019s\u201d brand coordinator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done art shows and have been involved in art my whole life, &#8230; and NFTs are really interesting because you can put a person in a position where they get exposed to people all around the world very quickly and that\u2019s amazing,\u201d Williams said. \u201cI don\u2019t know of any other projects that really existed before this whole world of NFTs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the NFT community is also creating a real-world presence around the globe. From NFT conventions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inputmag.com\/culture\/bored-ape-yacht-club-nft-nyc-ape-fest\">secret shows<\/a>, artist meet-and-greets, and more, NFT creators and buyers are tapping into the power of physical world connection to sustain the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Van Patten sees the \u201cCloud Machine\u201d community as being \u201crooted first and foremost in a love for art. And we\u2019re excited to have people who are interested in the trading aspect of it,\u201d he said. \u201cBut for the most part, we\u2019re just excited to make images that people have something to wake up to and they\u2019re just happy about.\u201d<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Van Patten said his NFTs will be bought with Ethereum but said he and his team are still in the process of deciding what the price point for &#8220;Cloud Machine&#8221; will be.<\/p>\n<p>Once the collection drops, Van Patten said they plan to host live drawing parties, DJ events where NFT owners can get together, and visit regional NFT conventions. Van Patten said they also anticipate hosting a launch party sometime before the release.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For those looking to keep up with the \u201cCloud Machine&#8221; release, Van Patten encourages people to follow their <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CloudmachineNFT\">Twitter page<\/a> and sign up for their <a href=\"https:\/\/pass.cameo.com\/drops\">whitelist with Cameo Pass<\/a>, the company that they\u2019ve teamed up with to launch their collection.
