font-weight: normal; line-height: 17px; text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/CiBMwpkMVHE\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A post shared by Zankou Chicken (@zankouchicken)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Though the chain has less than 20 locations in Southern California, it\u2019s extremely popular and famous\u2013so much so that Beck mentioned Zankou Chicken in his song \u201cDebra.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant sells wraps, kabobs and Tri-Tip Shawarma, but is best known for its rotisserie chicken, which the late food critic Jonathan Gold <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1991-08-01-fo-23-story.html\">once called<\/a> \u201cgolden, crisp-skinned and juicy, with developed chicken flavor, the kind of bird that makes you want to scour the carcass for stray bits of carbonized skin and delicious scraps of flesh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though their chicken is delicious unadorned, Zankou also makes a tangy garlic sauce that customers have raved about since the Armenian couple Vartkes and Markrid Iskenderian first opened the original Zankou Chicken restaurant in Beirut in 1962.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually the Lebanese civil war became too much for the family, and in 1984 they re-opened Zankou on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2010-mar-18-la-fi-zankou18-2010mar18-story.html\">according to the Los Angeles Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Iskenderian family has also been gripped in its own civil war since Vartkes died in 1992, according to the Times. In 2003, Mardiros Isekenderian\u2014Vartkes and Markrid\u2019s eldest son\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/longform\/the-zankou-chicken-murders\/\">shot and killed<\/a> his mother, sister Dzovig Marjik and himself.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the Zankou chain is actually two chains with competing websites and social media accounts, run by different factions of the Iskenderian family.<\/p>\n<p>The larger faction, run by Mardiros\u2019 wife Rita, operates 12 locations throughout Southern California and is opening the Long Beach location.
