{"id":32194,"date":"2022-10-31T14:15:02","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T21:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000028730"},"modified":"2023-03-20T00:01:34","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T07:01:34","slug":"simply-salad-opens-in-long-beach-and-the-salad-wars-are-about-to-begin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/simply-salad-opens-in-long-beach-and-the-salad-wars-are-about-to-begin","title":{"rendered":"Simply Salad opens in Long Beach, and the \u2018salad wars\u2019 are about to begin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In August 2019, Daniel Gonzalez was the chief financial officer at Popeyes and became one of the masterminds that kicked off the Chicken Sandwich Wars that saw <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Popeyes\/status\/1163510538959069184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1163510538959069184%7Ctwgr%5E160b7f104002c7f952f5dfbe1e4675f70507aa0f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vox.com%2Fthe-goods%2F2019%2F8%2F28%2F20836936%2Fpopeyes-chick-fil-a-fried-chicken-sandwich-twitter\">Chick-fil-A trying to defend its turf<\/a> while countless other fast food chains scrambled to match the success of the Louisiana Kitchen\u2019s new menu item. Today, as a co-owner of Simply Salad, Gonzalez said the &#8220;salad wars&#8221; are about to begin\u2014and Long Beach is now on the frontline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wars are coming,\u201d Gonzalez told the Business Journal in a recent interview at the new Long Beach location, noting that healthy food options are on the rise. \u201cOver the next decade, we\u2019re going to be the fastest growing category in food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the salad wars, there\u2019s a big prize,\u201d Gonzalez said, adding that now that the Los Angeles brand has expanded into Long Beach, competitors are already chattering about following suit.<\/p>\n<p>The healthy fast-casual eatery, which offers build-your-own salads and wraps, quietly opened its first Long Beach location at 1775 Ximeno Ave. on Oct. 3, and the reception has been warm, Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n<p>The new store is the seventh location for the company but only the second south of the 105 Freeway, joining Gardena. A Cerritos location is expected to open in the first quarter of next year, Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n<p>The first Simply Salad opened in the South Park area of LA in 2010 by Bruce Teichman and Cameron Lewis. Photo by Brandon Richardson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over the past two years, the company has been able to add more stars to the map in part thanks to a partnership with Gonzalez, who invested in the company.<\/p>\n<p>With the Long Beach store, the partners wanted to encapsulate the city\u2019s creative spirit and musical history. The space includes a mural featuring hip-hop legends and other imagery related to the city. One sign behind the counter reads: \u201cSnoop\u2019s new favorite greens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLong Beach is full of legends, especially in music, and there\u2019s a graffiti art culture, too,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cWarren G, Snoop Dogg, Sublime, VIP records\u2014you can\u2019t open here without paying homage to the legends that made LBC what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the LA stores have transplants from all over the country, Lewis said the new store is being worked mostly by born-and-raised Long Beachers.<\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach store is one of very few health-oriented food options near the Traffic Circle, which is dominated by fast food drive-thrus like Carl\u2019s Jr. and Raising Cane\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObesity is a problem in America; fast food is generally not as healthy,\u201d Gonzalez said, adding that customers value convenience over health. To that end, the goal at Simply Salad is to join health and convenience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthy food needs to find a way to become fast food and change what that definition is,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cEveryone is trying to figure out the right way to address the McDonald\u2019s customer \u2026 in a way that\u2019s healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000078327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000078327\" style=\"width: 1704px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10000078327\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/31135211\/SIMPLY-SALAD-2_1371.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1704\" height=\"2400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000078327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashley Sanchez grabs the greens to make a salad bowl at Simply Salad near the Traffic Circle Thursday, Oct. 27, 2022. Photo by Brandon Richardson.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The restaurant\u2019s build-your-own salads start at $8.95\u2014wraps at $8.45\u2014and include five \u201csimple\u201d toppings and one dressing with additions costing 50 cents each. The combinations are seemingly endless, a choice of five types of greens, 65 toppings (including \u201cpremium\u201d items) and 29 dressings.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez said the menu has nothing that is unfamiliar or \u201cscary to order\u201d because they want the healthy options to be easy and accessible to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just want the basics and we want to do them really, really well,\u201d Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n<p>The company also has 12 signature chef-created salads and wraps that vary in price from $7.45 to $14.<\/p>\n<p>The new location has not been heavily marketed, Lewis said, adding that they first want to work out any kinks with the store and its employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou only get one shot at a first impression,\u201d Lewis said, with Gonzalez adding that rather than spending on marketing, the restaurant is investing in food quality. Simply Salad\u2019s ingredients are farm direct, Gonzalez said, which means it is never frozen, always fresh.<\/p>\n<p>As the salad wars heat up, Lewis said the next and most obvious step\u2014outside of further expansion\u2014is the introduction of drive-thrus, which will help the concept compete with longstanding fast food chains. In the meantime, as more healthy concepts migrate to Long Beach and beyond, Gonzalez said Simply Salad welcomes the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not trying to take 100% of the market. I want good competitors to come over here and make us better,\u201d Gonzalez said. \u201cBring it on.
