{"id":32774,"date":"2023-01-15T08:00:41","date_gmt":"2023-01-15T16:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=30000029394"},"modified":"2023-03-20T00:01:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-20T07:01:32","slug":"sushi-nikkei-earned-a-prestigious-distinction-and-opened-a-new-location","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/sushi-nikkei-earned-a-prestigious-distinction-and-opened-a-new-location","title":{"rendered":"Sushi Nikkei earned a prestigious distinction\u2013and has now opened a new location"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After opening their first restaurant in Bixby Knolls less than a year ago, a local husband and wife team has now opened a second Sushi Nikkei location in Belmont Shore\u2014thanks to a loyal following of customers and a write-up in the world\u2019s most prestigious culinary guide.<\/p>\n<p>Owner Eduardo Chang Ogata, who runs Sushi Nikkei with wife Daiwa Wong Olano, said a reviewer from the famed Michelin Guide visited his Bixby Knolls establishment \u201cincognito\u201d in September.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000056898\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000056898\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10000056898 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/23120139\/sushi_nikkei_owners-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000056898\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daiwa Wong Olano (left) and Eduardo Chang Ogata. Photo courtesy Daiwa Wong Olano.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sushi Nikkei didn\u2019t earn a starred rating, but it is now one of just four establishments in Long Beach that is officially recommended by Michelin, <a href=\"https:\/\/guide.michelin.com\/us\/en\/article\/features\/what-it-means-to-be-a-michelin-recommended-restaurant#:~:text=%E2%80%9CA%20restaurant%20in%20the%20Recommended,at%20star%20or%20Bib%20level.%E2%80%9D\">which means<\/a> the food is \u201cabove average,\u201d according to the France-based rating organization. (The other Long Beach restaurants on the list include Chiang Ra, The Attic and Heritage.)<\/p>\n<p>The new location on Second Street opened Dec. 22, just eight months after the Bixby Knolls site. Ogata said the restaurant has had nothing but busy tables and lines around the corner, and the new location is already overwhelmed with bookings of over 100 reservations some days.<\/p>\n<p>Sushi Nikkei offers food lovers a blend of traditional Japanese charm and cuisine variety mixed with the colorful flare of Peruvian flavors.<\/p>\n<p>Four years ago, when Ogata came to Long Beach from Lima, Peru, it was his dream and his wife\u2019s dream to open a Peruvian restaurant on Second Street.<\/p>\n<p>With 15 years of experience under his belt, including owning two restaurants in Peru, Ogata and his staff, many who are Peruvian, are excited for the quick expansion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very fortunate,\u201d Ogata said in Spanish.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese term \u201cNikkei,\u201d which means \u201cJapanese outside of Japan,\u201d is traditionally used to refer to Japanese people who plant their roots in other countries. In Peru in the late 19th century, a swell of Asian migrant laborers from China and Japan immigrated to Peru, forever changing the landscape.<\/p>\n<p>After immigrating to the United States 10 years ago, Luis Valencia became the manager at Sushi Nikkei, working alongside his brother, Mauricio. Photo by Magnolia Lafleur.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The menu includes blue crab, yellow tail and striped bass hand rolls, alongside appetizers like grilled scallops and shishito peppers.<\/p>\n<p>A good starter and fan favorite is the \u201cSushi Nikkei Tasting,\u201d which offers a sampling that includes salmon, tuna, white fish and scallops.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t skip the \u201cTuna Power,\u201d made with the Parrillera sauce, aji amarillo (a chili paste) and chalaquita (imagine the taste of red peppers in wine juice instead of pico de gallo), which together give it a lemony kick while highlighting the taste of fresh tuna.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10000056887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10000056887\" style=\"width: 828px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10000056887\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/23094359\/tako_tirado_sushi_nikkei.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"828\" height=\"921\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10000056887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The tako tirado plate from Sushi Nikkei. Photo courtesy Daiwa Wong Olano.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The walls of Sushi Nikkei in Belmont Shore give patrons a view into history through black-and-white charcoal drawings of Peruvian artist Rodolfo Castro with a large mural of Japanese immigrants\u2019 arrival into Peru, while in the air the music of Buena Vista Social Club can be heard serenading guests.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want people to realize that when you mix two different cultures, you can truely come up with something very tasty,\u201d Valencia said. \u201cHere we offer you the elegance of Japan with the home feeling of Peru.
