This weekend locals can check out two art exhibitions, live music, entertainment and some interactive events\u2014like free music lessons. And for those who’d like to get a head start on gift shopping, there’s a darling Valentines Day pop-up in North Long Beach.<\/p>\n

“HIDDEN: LIFE WITH CALIFORNIA’S ROMA FAMILIES” PHOTO EXHIBITION (Thursday)<\/h3>\n

Local photojournalist Cristina Salvador Klenz has dedicated years of her life to photographing Southern California\u2019s Roma families, work that culminated after 30 years in “Hidden: Life with California’s Roma Families”<\/a> by Brown Paper Press, a book featuring 120 of her black-and-white photos, shot on 35 mm film.<\/p>\n

The photography book was the first of its kind to document American Roma (also known as Gypsy) communities, some of which include families in Long Beach. Though these family lineages share a unique history of persecution stemming from European condemnation and genocide during the Holocaust, today many Romani-Americans have little social contact with each other. Through her book, Klenz hopes that readers gain a greater understanding of Romani-American history, life, family and tradition.<\/p>\n

A collection of the photographs will be featured in an exhibition at Cal State Long Beach from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday until April 29, but locals can get a special glimpse into the work from Klenz herself on Thursday, Feb. 2, when she will give a tour of the exhibit and talk about each particular photograph. The free exhibition can be found on the third floor of the Academic Services Building on the college campus, and Thursday’s event will last from 5-7 p.m., with Klenz’s tour starting at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

FREE MUSIC CLASSES AT CAFE CHAPIN (Saturday)<\/h3>\n

Cafe Chapin, a cafe and art gallery space in Cambodia Town, is hosting free music lessons in piano, guitar and violin Saturday, Feb. 4.<\/p>\n

Guests of any age are invited to learn, though children and teens must be accompanied by an adult. Organizers have a limited number of instruments for attendees, but those who already own instruments are encouraged to bring their own.<\/p>\n

The class invites students of all age levels or abilities, but the focus of the three-hour class will be tailored more toward beginners. Click here<\/a> for information.<\/p>\n

The classes are a weekly event every Saturday, so those who can’t make it this weekend may visit at a later date.<\/p>\n

Quebec-based cirque company FLIP Fabrique is performing live at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center Saturday, Feb. 4, with a show of gravity-defying stunts, acrobatics and athleticism.<\/p>\n

The show in all of its spectacle, with performers in football uniforms and ballet costumes, is designed to explore and playfully push the boundaries of gender norms with a unifying message of acceptance in the pursuit of finding and accepting your truest self.<\/p>\n

Tickets for the show are $40 and may be purchased online<\/a>.<\/p>\n

DAINTY DISCO VALENTINE’S DAY POP-UP (Saturday)<\/h3>\n

Handmade gifts and accessories shop Dainty Disco is hosting a Valentine’s Day-themed pop-up Saturday, Feb. 4, for those who’d like to get a head start on their Valentine’s Day shopping.<\/p>\n

Over 15 vendors will be present at the store in North Long Beach, selling art, jewelry, flowers and other handcrafted gift items. The event will also feature a raffle with prizes.<\/p>\n

FUN-A-DAY-LA 7TH ANNUAL ART SHOW (Saturday)<\/h3>\n

Firehouse Community Farm is hosting an art gallery Saturday, Feb. 4, featuring a wide variety of artists and disciplines as part of its seventh annual art show, Fun-A-Day-LA, which aims to make art more accessible and engaging for the public.<\/p>\n

Saturday’s event will showcase illustration, sewing, weaving, painting, printmaking\u2014even edible art. The four-hour show will also have live music and food.<\/p>\n

Cover bands are nothing new to music venue and restaurant The Gaslamp, but this Saturday, Feb. 4, the tunes of bands that defined the genre of “emo music” will be performed all night long.<\/p>\n

Listen to the wails of My Chemical Romance, The Used, The Killers, Panic at the Disco, AFI and more all night long, performed by a full band. The show will also feature a live DJ performing in between sets.<\/p>\n

Tickets to the show cost $20. Those who’d like to purchase a table at additional cost can book online. Must be 21 or older to attend.<\/p>\n
