As we figure out how to keep cool, let\u2019s make sure our pets don\u2019t have to suffer\u2014they didn\u2019t start the industrial revolution and don&#8217;t produce as much methane gas as the rest of us. Here are a few tips for unseasonal seasonal comfort for your fur-friend:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First and most important: The California State Penal Code states that it\u2019s a crime to leave an animal unattended in a motor vehicle in conditions hazardous to the animal\u2019s health: heat, cold, or lack of adequate ventilation (that means that the windows should be open, not cracked) and without food or water (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.leginfo.ca.gov\/pub\/05-06\/bill\/sen\/sb_1801-1850\/sb_1806_bill_20060922_chaptered.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">see complete text here<\/a>). Charges for violating this law range from misdemeanor animal endangerment, punishable by up to six months in jail, or felony animal cruelty with a prison term of up to three years if the animal dies. Try an experiment next time you leave your car in the sun on a hot day: experience how it feels when you enter and then stay inside the vehicle for a few seconds without opening a window or starting the air conditioner. Then imagine sitting in there for 45 minutes\u2014you\u2019ll get the idea. If you balk at leaving a window in your car open, leave your friend at home on hot days. Should you see a pet in a car in the conditions just described, call 911 or security. Authorities are allowed to break a window and rescue the animal. If you get an argument with the authorities\u2014and it&#8217;s happened\u2014quote the penal code. Better yet, get in touch with <a href=\"http:\/\/da.lacounty.gov\/mr\/archive\/2009\/091009a.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L.A. County Deputy District Attorney Deborah Knaan\u2019s office<\/a>&nbsp;at (213) 503-7254 and download a poster (see graphic) or request a bunch of cards to leave in people\u2019s cars or to flash at anyone giving you an argument. If you have to take action yourself\u2014well, it\u2019s been done\u2014but your call.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><i><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-28743\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Scarlet-and-TEddy.jpg\" alt=\"Scarlet and TEddy\" width=\"620\" height=\"348\" \/><\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>Teddy takes a walk on the shady side with human companion Scarlett.<\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t walk dogs in extreme heat. Walk them early in the morning or in the evening when it\u2019s cooler, shorten the walks, and don\u2019t run. Keep them home where there\u2019s plenty of shade, clean water and air conditioning, if you\u2019re lucky to have it.<\/li>\n<li>When you do walk your dog, walk him or her in the shade, on grass instead of asphalt. Just as you would, get a dog sun visor, sunglasses or goggles and apply sunscreen for pets to the cat or dog&#8217;s nose\u2014especially light-colored noses\u2014and any missing fur or anywhere the skin\u2019s exposed. Put booties or protection cream on your dog\u2019s feet (or your cat\u2019s, if he or she will stand for it). They have feeling there, too\u2014walking barefoot on hot pavement should give you some idea\u2014or just touch the pavement with your hand to see how hot it is. All the items mentioned here can be found online or at pet-supply stores. Ask your vet for a recommendation for the sunscreen.<\/li>\n<li>Except for the aforementioned booties, don\u2019t subject your pet to fashion on a sweltering day.<\/li>\n<li>Dogs pant to cool themselves off. Cats, though, don\u2019t pant often unless they\u2019re under stress or extremely overheated. Signs of overheating also include drooling, difficulty breathing, increased heart or respiratory rate, weakness or collapse. Elevated temperature (over 104 degrees), bloody diarrhea or vomiting also could be signs. Flat-faced dogs and cats (bulldogs, pugs, Persians and so on) are particularly susceptible to heatstroke because they cannot breathe efficiently; elderly, infirm and senior pets are also susceptible, so keep them cool. If you see any of these symptoms, slowly immerse the animal in cool (not cold) water and <strong>call your vet immediately.<\/strong> Long Beach has an emergency clinic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbervet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Long Beach Animal Emergency<\/a>&nbsp;at 4720 E. PCH, right next to Centinela Pet Supplies. Phone: (562) 735-5200; there are others nearby as well.<\/li>\n<li>Give your dog or cat a summer cooler by dropping ice cubes into the water dish. Dogs and the occasional weird cat enjoy splashing in a kiddie pool\u2014even more summer fun for everyone if you have a young child as a bathing companion.<\/li>\n<li>Brush the cat daily and occasionally wet him or her down with damp towels. Let the cat lie on the tile floor and the bathtub.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, do not shave the cat. Or the dog, for that matter. Dogs, depending on the breed, need their fur to keep the sun away as do all cats; cat fur, furthermore, keeps the animal cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It\u2019s like insulation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcaLA.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spcaLA<\/a>&nbsp;for helping with these hints.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\" align=\"right\"><i>\u201cJust chill.\u201d<br \/><\/i><i>~ Ubiquitous<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Kibble<\/h3>\n<p>The brushfire in the Los Cerritos Wetlands was extinguished pretty quickly; many thanks to our quick-acting fire department. Many area businesses were evacuated, including the Petco on Second Street and PCH. All the live animals, including the adoptable cats from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Helen-Sanders-CatPAWS\/101548333228010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Helen Sanders CatPAWS rescue<\/a>, were quickly and efficiently relocated as well, according to CatPAWS cofounder Annelle Baum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff at Petco and volunteers called for help. They did a quick and amazing job,\u201d Baum said. \u201cThey were prepared for such an emergency\u2014[Petco\u2019s animals] were taken to another Petco on Warner and Springdale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CatPAWS\u2019s kittens went to a facility that the group had built for their rescues, located inside the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joyfulpawshotel.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joyful Paws pet hotel<\/a>. The birds, Baum said, were not returned to the original facility for a couple of days lest there be residual smoke.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so impressed,\u201d Baum said.<\/p>\n<h3>Virtually Pets<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-28744\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/sammy.jpg\" alt=\"sammy\" width=\"640\" height=\"571\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sammy is one of the two cats rescued by Helen Sanders CatPAWS and evacuated from Petco, but he\u2019s back now and ready to go home. This gorgeous 1 \u00bd-year-old Siamese mix was given a last-minute reprieve on Death Row, and he gets to celebrate the second of his nine lives with a loving family.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-28745\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/Miss-Meow.jpg\" alt=\"Miss Meow\" width=\"620\" height=\"490\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Miss Meow is a 2 \u00bd-year old silver tabby and the other Petco evacuee. Her owner died and there was no family to take her in, so she wound up at a shelter.
