Photo courtesy of LilBub.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Following its 2012 debut in Minnesota, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkerart.org\/openfield\/programs\/internet-cat-video-film-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walker Art Center\u2019s Internet Cat Video Film Festival<\/a> has grown into a nationwide tour and will be making its Long Beach stop at The Federal Bar this Friday.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignright size-full wp-image-27526\" style=\"float: right;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/nyan.gif\" alt=\"nyan\" width=\"300\" \/>The prominent Minneapolis-based contemporary art institution\u2014known more for Andy Warhol and Matthew Barney than for Colonel Meow&nbsp;and Maru\u2014opened the festival to some 10,000 cat-goers last year. Originally an idea of Walker Program Associate Katie Hill, the museum found that the festival would fit well within its Open Field Initiative, a program that revolves around experimental public exhibits and programming.<\/p>\n<p>The festival, at least in terms of online popularity, makes sense: <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2010\/10\/21\/why-does-the-web-love-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cats are the absolute, uncontested rulers of the Internet<\/a>. From <a href=\"http:\/\/l.yimg.com\/bt\/api\/res\/1.2\/RAz_Sp8MlTyRFtgdgF6NhQ--\/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NTt3PTMwMA--\/http:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en-US\/blogs\/movietalk\/grumpy-cat-meme-jpg_163424.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grumpy Cat<\/a>&nbsp;(whose&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/TheOfficialGrumpyCat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a>&nbsp;has over 3M likes and counting, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com\/236x\/7d\/88\/79\/7d8879b5afb184c252b2b08334cf6f71.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">has<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-1tttFSAefCI\/UZ-j6ewvJSI\/AAAAAAAABPY\/wY5bIVS7Ow4\/s1600\/grumpy-cat-lemonade.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">spawned<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.awfuladvertisements.com\/images\/Grumpy-Cat-Purina.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">countless<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.sheknows.com\/articles\/2013\/07\/Mike\/SK\/grumpy_cat\/Grumpy_Cat_013.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">memes<\/a>)&nbsp;to the smartphone app <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/catwang-super-awesome-sticker\/id511664488?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Catwang<\/a>, cats have ruled the digisphere <a href=\"http:\/\/knowyourmeme.com\/memes\/subcultures\/cats\">since the early days of Usenet<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft size-full wp-image-27527\" style=\"float: left;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/Screen_Shot_2014-01-21_at_3.23.02_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 3.23.02 PM\" width=\"300\" height=\"474\" \/>2013 marks the organization\u2019s second foray into the internet kitty world after sifting through 10,000 online nominations vying for awards in multiple categories, including Comedy, Drama, Foreign, Animated, Musical, Documentary, and the coveted top prize that is the Godlen Kitty Award. Newly added categories include the inaugural Hall of Fame\u2014it includes seven honorees: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=J---aiyznGQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Keyboard Cat<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QH2-TGUlwu4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nyan<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=R_fUsssnHPw&amp;list=RD0M7ibPk37_U\">Henri: Le Chat Noir<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/lilbub.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lil BUB<\/a>, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FtX8nswnUKU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kittens Inspired by Kittens<\/a>,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/mugumogu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Maru<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nni0rTLg5B8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Boots and Cats<\/em><\/a>\u2014along with the Minnesota-inspired \u201cCat-on-a-Stick\u201d category.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s Golden Kitty winner\u2014\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Q34z5dCmC4M\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Henri 2: Paw de Deux<\/a>,\u201d a French art-house send-up featuring the aforementioned Henri: Le Chat Noir\u2014documents the existential crisis of black-and-white Henri in black-and-white film. His tormented&nbsp;musings\u2014\u201cI live a life of luxury. My caretakers love me. But I feel empty,\u201d he tells us through subtitles\u2014has sparked <a href=\"http:\/\/www.henrilechatnoir.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">an online store<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Henri-Chat-Noir-William-Braden\/dp\/1607745100\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a Random House book<\/a> about his philosophical musings.<\/p>\n<p>2013\u2019s Golden Kitty Award winner is none other than the aforementioned Grumpy Cat herself, who appeared in Minneapolis with her pets, Tabatha and Bryan Bundesen, to grab her honor (<a href=\"http:\/\/whyevolutionistrue.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/grumpy-cat-friskies-thank-no-one.jpg%3Fw%3D400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">without being impressed much<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s festival will be 75-minutes of feline-filled madness, with 65 selected from the thousands submitted. The film is not, contrary to what some naysayers may think, a YouTube playlist compiled and projected onto a screen: organizer and curator Scott Stulen edited the entire reel into a what the Walker calls a fully-produced film.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-27528\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/HenriLeChat.jpg\" alt=\"HenriLeChat\" width=\"640\" height=\"351\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Henri: Le Chat Noir contemplates life&#8217;s deepest troubles.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Festival is an ingenious, independent and alternative film program, and we\u2019re pleased that the Long Beach Federal will be hosting this cleverly themed event,\u201d says Knitting Factory Entertainment CEO Morgan Margolis. \u201cIt\u2019s also a great pleasure to be supporting Minneapolis\u2019 prestigious Walker Arts Center in bringing the Cat Video Festival to cities around the West Coast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Walker Art Center\u2019s Internet Cat Video Film Festival will be held on Friday, January 24, at The Federal Bar, located at 102 Pine Avenue. Tickets are $20 at the door, which will open at 8:30PM.
