After winning a grant from the Women’s Business Council, Long Beach’s Farm Lot 59 had hoped to be able to buy a much needed tractor since the urban farmers currently toil by hand. However, that grant has proved to be short by $2,500 and now they are requesting donations to help them achieve their goal.<\/p>\n
Tucked on the backside of Willow Springs Park, Farm Lot 59 is a one-sixth acre urban farm that–through its roadside stand called Farm Stand 59–offers fresh vegetables those who visit on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as fresh eggs from the chickens they hold.<\/p>\n
“Currently we are doing everything by hand and as rewarding as that is its not very efficient,” said Sasha Kanno, who runs the farm. “The purchase of a tractor would allow us to be able to accomplish a lot more in a lot less time.”<\/p>\n
The farm is now entering its second year and they hope to increase their production rate of providing entirely organic vegetables, fruit, flowers, and honey–but given they work by hand, only half of their property is being used.<\/p>\n
