For developer and builder Jan van Dijs–and echoed visually through the lens of photographer Lindsey Ingram–the phase that the Psychic Temple building on Broadway is in epitomizes Long Beach in a philosophical sense.<\/p>\n

“Right now, [the building] is a physical manifestation of Long Beach’s changing facade,” said van Dijs. “There’s an element of history and an element of the future.”<\/p>\n

That history–it was once everything from a cult headquarter to a brothel, a flophouse to a speakeasy–comes through these stunning photographs that show mid-construction how vastly altered the building will eventually become while clinging to hints of what it was.<\/p>\n

The building, situated at 224 E. Broadway just slightly east of the Promenade, is expected to be completed before the end of the year.<\/p>\n
