Ripples has a celebrity-impersonator drag show that’s just as top-shelf as Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas. ICONS is sort of like an old school variety show wrapped around weekly themes (recent themes have included Disney princesses, Broadway babies, and old Hollywood). So now, this night is split into two halves—first half: local troubadour Matt Costa knocks out a set of Americana rock in the vein of Ryan Adams-meets-Belle and Sebastian. The second half, DJ Lithuanian Prince—maybe one of the smartest DJs you’ll hear all year—spins a quirky mix of British psychedelia, bouncy Tamla-Motown, and obscure freakbeat 45s. This day at the park should be nothing like that—well, except for the celebration of Puerto Rica part. From all of my research, it looks like this event is sorting out to be a small-scale Puerto Rican Lollapalooza: well-known Puerto Rican bands such as Lucky Seven and Son Mayor roca hacia fuera while you’re free to roam the Queen Mary’s sprawling lawns. Segall (born in Laguna Beach, but lives in San Francisco) has been receiving a lot of critical acclaim as of late—especially from the East Coast music press.
