The first example will be Pick of the Pet Rescues because unless you already have one, you need to get a pet in order to take advantage of the rest of the neat stuff that Long Beach houses for companion animals. As for the rescuers themselves, every single one of them who has rescued pets, many of them literally at death’s door, and has taken responsibility and proper care of them deserves an award. Winning acclaim, however, isn’t why any of them does what he or she does.

Judy and I came up with the idea and the categories for this list after reading the Long Beach Post’s “Best Of” and decided that pets shouldn’t be left out. From now on, though, I’ll be writing the articles alone, with assistance and guidance from other people, Judy in particular. Judy is becoming increasingly proactive in humane education and animal advocacy, and they, combined with her family, leave her little time for the research necessary to create our posts.

When Robert Garcia asked me to write a column about pets a few years ago, I initially balked. Yes, I love animals and support volunteer efforts, and I can string words together, but what the heck did I know about issues, legislation, and all that stuff? But I relented and went looking for someone to help. Enter, enthusiastically, Judy Crumpton.

Judy and Mutt’s cartoonist Patrick McDonnell at his L.A. signing.

My favorite way to describe Judy is as someone who knows where all the bones are buried. In the years I’ve worked with her, I’ve learned volumes about important legislation, who all the movers and shakers are, events, rescue, spay/neuter, animal-health issues and scads more stuff. I’ve tried as well as I could to give it all voice so we could give voice to animals. As her promise to keep the Crumpton Clout in the articles, Judy’s graciously said that she’d look over any article that I have qualms about posting.

Judy’s off to teach future generations about humane and responsible treatment of animals and to work for their benefit. Also, if you live in District 9, watch for her monthly pet tips in Councilmember Steven Neal’s newsletter. I will miss working with her, but I also know that whatever she does, it will result in great things for those little (and big) guys who can’t speak for themselves.

Hey!
