{"id":465,"date":"2018-10-04T15:40:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T22:40:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999921416"},"modified":"2018-10-04T15:40:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T22:40:20","slug":"pet-projects-october-brings-falling-leaves-pumpkin-spice-air-freshener-and-of-course-fluffy-bunnies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/pets\/pet-projects-october-brings-falling-leaves-pumpkin-spice-air-freshener-and-of-course-fluffy-bunnies","title":{"rendered":"October brings falling leaves, pumpkin-spice air freshener and, of course, fluffy bunnies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What do fuzzy-wuzzy bunnies bring to mind, with their frolicking among newly opened flora, their little cottony tails and wiggly noses twitching as they hop along the bunny trail, and their propensity for hiding eggs all around the park and your backyard?<\/p>\n<p>Why, October, of course, and the first full month of autumn.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, there\u2019s no season or holiday that stresses the need to adopt a pet than today, or whatever day you\u2019re reading this. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\">Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcala.com\/\">spcaLA<\/a> and most rescues are up to their long ears in rabbits.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbits also have to be spayed or neutered so that they won\u2019t multiply like rabbits and fill shelters. When pet rabbits become adults, they often lose their cuteness appeal to people (not to us). Domestic buns are dumped in parks or schlepped to the shelter when their owners realize that they\u2019re little guys with needs and not living stuffed toys.<\/p>\n<p>Rabbits make wonderful pets at any age. They\u2019re affectionate and loaded with personality, believe it or not (<em>dumb bunny <\/em>is not necessarily a thing), and they can be litter-box trained. If you have the know-how and desire to \u201cbunny-proof\u201d your house, your new bunny won\u2019t need to spend his or her life in a pen.<\/p>\n<p>During the month of October, ACS and spcaLA will be adopting out rabbits for a $30 fee to adopters who meet all qualifications. Here are a few of the little Leporidae (just a point of education and showing off\u2014some mistakenly think rabbits are rodents and up until a few years ago, I did, too) that are waiting at ACS for the right magician to pull them out of the hat. Maybe there is an October connection after all.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-999921420 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Kale-970x703.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everyone needs a little kale to keep them healthy and happy. Here\u2019s a little <strong>Kale<\/strong> for you. He\u2019s about 2 years old and the shelter says that he appears to be an American. Dark leafy greens like kale are good in moderation for bunnies\u2014for more info on diet, check with your vet or see <a href=\"https:\/\/rabbit.org\/suggested-vegetables-and-fruits-for-a-rabbit-diet\/\">House Rabbit Society\u2019s excellent recommendations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-999921422 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TAwney-970x727.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tawney<\/strong>\u2019s ears are so long that they couldn\u2019t fit in the photo! This adorable little American rabbit is about a year old and very cuddly. Foo Foo, too, is an American, about two years old. We highly recommend Foo Foo as a friend\u2014wanna be his fairy godmother?
