Princess and Max<\/em> <\/p>\n

If these two don\u2019t make up the odd couple, I don\u2019t know who does (as a matter of fact, don\u2019t you think that Max, left, looks like Walter Matthau?). They were brought into the shelter by a homeless woman who made the entire staff cry. She is moving to a shelter that won’t take animals (there is a need!) and she had to leave them with ACS. The min pin, Princess, is 8 years old and obviously overweight, and the cocker, Max, is 6 and is slightly blind. Max loves to play ball and can find his ball even if it\u2019s under the bed. Princess smiles a lot. They are both fixed, so they only need a microchip and rabies shot. The min pin is 8 years oldand the cocker is 6. They need to stay together\u2014does someone have a room in his or her heart and home? Please. Visit ACS, 7700 E. Spring St., on the shelter side. <\/p>\n

Fiona<\/em> <\/p>\n

Fiona is a darling cocker spaniel mix, about 7 months old. She\u2019s also available at the shelter at ACS. Ask for Kennel 625. <\/p>\n

Sugar<\/em> <\/p>\n

This is Sugar, and her rescuer says that she\u2019s as sweet as her namesake. However, her former owner was not sweet\u2014the rescuer said that she took terrible care of her and then left her behind after she moved. Her rescuer is only holding her until someone just as sweet and caring as she is comes along to give her a forever home. Sugar is about 10 months old and is playful and loyal, gets along with cats and other dogs and, best of all, is housebroken. Buddy<\/em> <\/p>\n

Buddy didn\u2019t have a buddy when he was brought to ACS when his human passed away. The family member in whose care Buddy was left didn\u2019t want to take care of him and demonstrated this in quite a nasty way. If you\u2019re interested in becoming Buddy\u2019s forever buddy, visit ACS (shelter side, 7700 East Spring St., Long Beach, CA 90815 and ask for ID A415536. This month celebrates the birthday of Buddy Holly\u2014give his namesake something to celebrate Every Day. <\/p>\n

Bandit (found home), Ebony, Misty and Purity<\/em> <\/p>\n

Reader Mark Romans e-mailed us an article about his late sister, Seal Beach Animal Care Center shelter volunteer Vianne Jones, and her four beautiful cats she left behind when she died of breast cancer. It\u2019s not uncommon to hear of pets who have been left behind by human friends who have given them nothing but love. Mark has found a home for Bandit, one of the cats, but there are three left. Oct. 8, Friends of Long Beach Animals Pet Appreciation Fair and WALK, El Dorado Regional Park <\/strong><\/p>\n

On your bark\u2014get set\u2014go! Let\u2019s walk some more! This great FOLBA event takes place at El Dorado Regional Park, 7550 E. Spring St., from 9 a.m.\u20133 p.m. Added to the fun is our educational Pet Appreciation Fair featuring pet contests for pet\/owner lookalike, most photogenic, best tricks and more; Muttley Crew’s agility and Flyball teams and Disc Dogs, Aquarium of the Pacific\u2018s mobile learning center, kids\u2019 activities, vendors, raffles, food, and entertainment by LB\u2019s own Blue Steel Band. Animal Care Services will be in attendance with vaccination and microchip service. Event is free; for those wanting to walk, online WALK registration is $25 ($30 on the day of the event.) Long Beach has a huge canine population estimated at over 100,000. We have several great parks and a dog beach around town, but there aren\u2019t enough off-leash areas to provide the running and playing room needed to keep our urban dogs healthy and happy! Friends of El Dorado Dog Park wants to help solve this problem by creating a three-to-four-acre dog park in El Dorado Regional Park, and a fun event is planned to help raise the $100,000 needed to make this happen. Along with music, a raffle, free popcorn for the kids, dog training demos and more, there will be more than 30 vendors and a few gourmet food trucks offering their wares to the holiday-shopping crowds.
