{"id":4972,"date":"2011-09-23T11:16:00","date_gmt":"2011-09-23T11:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/latin-american-studies-film-series-returns-to-cal-state-long-beach\/"},"modified":"2011-09-23T11:16:00","modified_gmt":"2011-09-23T11:16:00","slug":"latin-american-studies-film-series-returns-to-cal-state-long-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/latin-american-studies-film-series-returns-to-cal-state-long-beach","title":{"rendered":"Latin American Studies Film Series Returns to Cal State Long Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>9:45am | <\/strong>The Latin American Studies Film Series returns to California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) with the theme \u201cReconciling Realities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The first film of the series screens on Thursday, Oct. 6, in the University Theater at 7 p.m. with a different film being shown on each successive Thursday in October at the same place and same time.&nbsp; Admission is free and parking is available in Lot 7. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s theme of \u2018Reconciling Realities\u2019 deals with the way we see things and the ways in which we perceive certain realities which aren\u2019t necessarily that way,\u201d said CSULB Film and Electronic Arts Professor Jos\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez-H., who has led the series since 2002.&nbsp; \u201cIt examines the human condition of how personal perspectives change the way we see the world.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Oct. 6, the series opens with \u201cAl sur de la frontera\u201d (\u201cSouth of the Border\u201d), which is directed by Oliver Stone (\u201cWall Street,\u201d \u201cPlatoon\u201d).&nbsp; S\u00e1nchez-H. first encountered Stone\u2019s documentary while doing research on Bolivian cinema for a chapter of the book International Film Guide 2011.&nbsp; It explores the misrepresentation by mainstream U.S. media of five Latin American countries. <\/p>\n<p>Stone interviews seven presidents, including Cristina Kirchner from Argentina and her husband, former President Nestor Kirchner; Evo Morales from Bolivia; Lula Silva from Brazil; Ra\u00fal Castro from Cuba; Fernando Lugo from Paraguay; and Hugo Ch\u00e1vez from Venezuela.&nbsp; This film runs 78 minutes and is in Spanish with English subtitles. <\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez-H. is excited about this year\u2019s variety of titles and is especially pleased by the second film of the series screening on Thursday, Oct. 13.&nbsp; Titled \u201cArea Q,\u201d the film was made by CSULB Film and Electronic Arts alumni Gerson Sanginitto, who served as writer\/director, and Carina Sanginitto, who served as director of photography. Thomas Mathews (Isaiah Washington, \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy,\u201d \u201cRomeo Must Die) is an award-winning reporter who finds his life taking a turn after his son disappears.&nbsp; This film runs 100 minutes and is in English and Portuguese with subtitles. <\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez-H. first saw \u201cArea Q\u201d at the Brazilian Film Festival in Los Angeles where it screened to a packed theater.&nbsp; \u201cI am pleased to have representatives of the next generation of CSULB filmmakers in this year\u2019s series,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cStudents who enrolled at CSULB to study filmmaking are now making movies in other countries.&nbsp; Showing this work in the film series gives alumni an opportunity to share their work with current students.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Oct. 20, the series continues with a preserved classic film from Puerto Rico, \u201cDios los cria\u201d (\u201cFa\u00e7ade,\u201d 1980) directed by Jacobo Morales.&nbsp; \u201cFa\u00e7ade\u201d was the film debut for Morales, who received a 1989 Best Foreign Language Oscar nomination for his film \u201cWhat Happened to Santiago?\u201d The new 35mm print was restored by the Academy Film Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, and CSULB\u2019s Department of Film and Electronic Arts.&nbsp; This film runs 120 minutes and is in Spanish with English subtitles. <\/p>\n<p>The series\u2019 commitment to film preservation has been present from the beginning, S\u00e1nchez-H. pointed out.&nbsp; \u201cI\u2019ve been involved in the restoration of Latin American films since 2002,\u201d he said.&nbsp; \u201cFilm preservation is an important part of film history because it helps to keep films available in the future for other generation of filmmakers, scholars and students who will benefit from this cultural experience.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A question-and-answer session with Josef Lindner, who did the film\u2019s preservation, will follow the screening. <\/p>\n<p>The last film arrives on Thursday, Oct. 27 with a drama written and directed by Rodrigo Garcia titled \u201cMadres e hijas\u201d (\u201cMother and Child\u201d).&nbsp; It tells the story of three women struggling to maintain control of their lives.&nbsp; This film runs 125 minutes and is in English.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a wonderful film, written and directed with genuine sensitivity,\u201d Sanchez-H. noted.&nbsp; \u201cI had the opportunity to see this film at the National Association of Latino Independent Producers Conference.&nbsp; Director Rodrigo Garcia and Producer Julie Lynn kindly agreed to come to campus to present this film.&nbsp; I think it is a great opportunity for students who attend the film series to participate in the Q&#038;A and learn from that experience.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sanchez-H believes the series has grown into a significant bridge between town and gown.&nbsp;
