Performances will be held outdoors on Sustainable Waves\u2019 solar-powered sound in the Rainbow Harbor amphitheater, located at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Shoreline Drive.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">SAM co-founder Rand Foster \u2014 who, as owner of Long Beach\u2019s most beloved record shop, Fingerprints, knows a thing or two about good music \u2014 calls Battle of the Tribute Bands \u201ca shameless good time!\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\"><br \/>\u201cThis event includes much of the popular music that has built the collective soundtrack of our lives. The bands present themselves with a respectful nod to the importance of the originals, but with a nod and a wink to the inherent silliness of putting on a costume to go to work,\u201d Foster said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">On the bill for three rounds of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll combat: Stone Temple Co-Pilots (a tribute to Stone Temple Pilots), Pretentious (a tribute to The Pretenders), Hello Operator (a tribute to The White Stripes), TNT (atribute to AC\/DC) and The Who Show (a tribute to The Who). Crowd-pleaser Nick \u201cFierce\u201d Pierce will emcee and guide you through tribute performances by this dedicated array of talent, which will have you flashing back and head-banging all afternoon.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Tribute bands will compete in a three-round elimination process at the behest of three celebrity judges, including Oingo Boingo\u2019s Johnny Vatos, Downtown Long Beach Associates President and CEO Kraig Kojian and <em>Press-Telegram<\/em> columnist Tim Grobaty. The afternoon\u2019s spinning will be handled by local favorite DJ Lithuanian Prince in between tribute sets.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Two bands will play back-to-back on a solar-powered stage, moving to the next round after a decibel reading of the crowd\u2019s applause and the judges\u2019 consensus. Prize money will go to the three crowd favorites: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Conveniently situated in the heart of Rainbow Harbor\u2019s restaurant boardwalk, Battle of the Tribute Bands will be the prime opportunity to rock out to old hits while you grab a bite to eat at one of the many dockside dining destinations.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Showcasing a renewed focus on environmental concerns, all concerts will be held on self-contained solar-powered stages. The Downtown Long Beach Associates and Long Beach Redevelopment Agency, SAM\u2019s major sponsors, in conjunction with SAM founding members, are partnering with Sustainable Waves, a San Diego\/Austin-based all-solar staging, lighting and sound company offering 100 percent pollution-free concerts.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">Alternative transportation to the event is encouraged, with several public transit options offered by Long Beach Transit. Local cycling advocacy group Long Beach Cyclists will also be offering free bike valet parking throughout the day.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">&nbsp;<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS';\">The SAM series features a stockpile of local and regional talent, including Long Beach musicians, writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers and media professionals, as well as enormous support from local businesses and community organizations. This year, SAM will also be fortified by the dedicated efforts of an entire team of event-coordinating music lovers and by a unique partnership with DLBA.
