{"id":53,"date":"2019-05-17T12:23:57","date_gmt":"2019-05-17T19:23:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999950451"},"modified":"2019-05-17T12:23:57","modified_gmt":"2019-05-17T19:23:57","slug":"cats-in-the-civic-center-pugs-in-the-park-what-a-week-to-get-your-furry-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/pets\/cats-in-the-civic-center-pugs-in-the-park-what-a-week-to-get-your-furry-on","title":{"rendered":"Cats in the Civic Center, Pugs in the park: What a week to get your furry on!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, May 21, a whole lot of cats and their spokespurrsons will crowd the lobby of City Hall from 2 to 5 p.m. They\u2019re demanding good, forever homes, and that\u2019s where <em>you<\/em> come in.<\/p>\n<p>The Mayor\u2019s Kitty Hall (see\u00a0<strong>Things to do, pets to support<\/strong>) has had three previous felinious invasions featuring cats from the shelter at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeach.gov\/acs\/pets\/adoptions\/cats\/\">Long Beach Animal Care Services<\/a>. A lot of cats have gone home\u2014the mayor\u2019s senior administrative deputy, Tim Patton, remembers 38 adoptions at Kitty Hall 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The field will be even more crowded this year. Five rescues, including Animal Care Services, will team up their proteges for a collective cacophony of catcalls that will caterwaul both for attention and for out. Spring St. (at entrance to El Dorado Park), Long Beach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Satellite Cat Adoption Center, Pet Food Express, 4220\u00a0Long Beach<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Blvd., Long Beach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Long Beach shelter is the intake for all roaming, injured, dumped, confiscated and otherwise unfortunate animals who\u2019ve had the bad luck of not having been treated well. Adoptions are conducted at the shelter, but not everyone likes going to a shelter. Thus, Pet Food Express stores provide a good way to view cats (and to create a few empty shelter cages) by pulling cats from Animal Care Services and displaying them at the volunteer-run center.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999950457\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999950457\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999950457 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Juicy-969x737.jpg\" alt=\"white cat with orange mask, ears, tail and spots in kennel\" width=\"600\" height=\"456\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999950457\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Juicy<\/strong> lives at Long Beach Animal Care Services for now. We\u2019re not certain of his age, which adds to his mystery. But don\u2019t let that austere countenance fool you\u2014Coal is a snuggler, a purrer, and an occasional talker. McDuff is a domestic longhair and obviously quite affectionate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.spcala.com\/\">spcaLA<\/a>, 7700 E. He\u2019ll be waiting at Kitty Hall!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.helensanderscatpaws.com\/\">Helen Sanders CatPAWS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CatPAWS is an all-volunteer independent rescue that pulls kittens and cats from shelters, spays and neuters them, gets them vaccinated and any medical attention they need, and finds them homes. Cats under their paw are housed in fosters or at the adoption centers at the Marina Petco and at the PetSmart in Seal Beach. Recently, they\u2019ve intertwined tails with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlelionfoundation.org\/\">The Little Lion Foundation<\/a> and the shelter to found the newly opened <a href=\"http:\/\/www.littlepawsproject.org\/\">Long Beach Little Paws Project<\/a>, where newborn kittens are nursed to health. She is definitely a special girl!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/lbsn.org\/\">Long Beach Spay &amp; Neuter Foundation<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This all-volunteer organization spends endless hours trapping, spaying and neutering, and giving all the medical care they can to further control the unwanted pet population and find homes to all the little guys that are social enough to adopt\u2014the kittens especially. Sadly, among the truly feral felines wander those whose friendly behavior speaks of a comfort of being around humans. Kittens get dumped, too. It\u2019s like with the rabbits in the parks\u2014people think that if they dump a cat in a colony, they\u2019ll do just fine. Usually, they\u2019ll breed like rabbits, get sick or die.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999950465 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/fREDDY-OR-jimmy-SN-e1558120326757-969x979.jpg\" alt=\"one brown-striped cat sits up and the other lies down on a beige carpet lying on a gray marble floor.\" width=\"600\" height=\"606\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are two of these beauties. <strong>Jimmy<\/strong>, above, was dumped in an area where the volunteers have maintained a colony since 2008. He was only 3 months old. A colony manager caught him with a net when he went into the feeder house. He\u2019s now a year old and is a darling boy who loves to play and snuggle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freddy<\/strong> was actually born in a cat colony. The colony manager trapped him when he was 4 months old. He\u2019s now a little over a year old and is very self-assured. He loves to play and accepts gentle pets. His nickname is Special Agent Gibbs! Not only is he curious but he also gets things done, out of there, over there and under there! He keeps his poor foster looking for her missing stuff!<\/p>\n<p>They get along with other cats but really trust each other most. They play like teenagers, rest together, and eat together. This event is a highlight\u2014it\u2019s more than a bunch of dogs being adorable in duplicate, with human gushings of aaaaaawwww and ooohhhhh and \u201cCan we get one <em>please<\/em>? The celebration is the milestone that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pugrescueofkorea.org\/\">Pug Rescue of Korea<\/a> reached of rescuing 500 of these funny little dogs from South Korea in 10 years and flying them overseas to safe, good homes in the United States, mostly in SoCal. Hye Sook Kim, the organization\u2019s head rescuer (pictured in pj\u2019s with a bunch of puglets snoring and snorfling around her) will be flying in from South Korea to attend the event and catch up with the little dogs whose lives she saved. According to the press release, South Korea hasn\u2019t yet caught up to the U.S.\u2019s pets-as-family culture. Unwanted pets are taken to shelters where they\u2019re euthanized after 10 days, and the country\u2019s awash in puppy mills and\u2014don\u2019t close your eyes\u2014dog-meat markets. The number of pugs in South Korea is akin to any \u201ccelebrity animal\u201d\u2014people think they\u2019re cute and don\u2019t research the breed. Then, they discover their behavior or breathing issues firsthand or just get annoyed when they grow larger and chubbier.
