10:00am |<\/strong> In an upcoming issue of the magazine U.S. News & World Report<\/em>, California State University Long Beach (CSULB) will be ranked as the fourth best public school in the West region and twenty-fourth best school – public or private – overall in the West region. The announcement comes on the heels of CSULB being named to the Princeton Review<\/em>‘s Best In The West<\/a> list a few weeks ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the difficult economic situation our institution has faced over the last year, we\u2019ve been able to maintain our standing as one of the best universities in the West.  In fact, overall, we improved our ranking slightly,\u201d said CSULB President F. King Alexander.  \u201cThe success of Cal State Long Beach in these ratings is a direct result of the efforts of our faculty and staff, who were asked to sacrifice a great deal during the last academic year but continued to serve students with the same professionalism and pride.\u201d <\/p>\n

CSULB, along with all 23 universities in the California State University system, was forced to deal with massive budget cutbacks last year that led to slashes in enrollment, the elimination of a Spring class, and furlough weekdays. For the coming school year, the college will accept applications for Spring enrollment<\/a>, a major step on the road to recovery for both the school and its students.<\/p>\n

CSULB earned the #4 ranking for public universities in the West region for the third consecutive year. The West region is comprised of all schools from Texas to Washington, including Alaska and Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The school also earned a diversity score of 0.69 out of 1.0, the fifth best among West region universities. The score indicates how racially diverse the student population is.<\/p>\n

\u201cA university\u2019s student enrollment should reflect the diverse communities that it serves,” said President Alexander. “Cal State Long Beach does that, and it is an area we focus on improving every year.\u201d <\/p>\n
