I have been passing this place on Clark Avenue called Uncle Bud’s a few times a week for the last couple of years, but it has taken me awhile to make it in, since they are only open mornings from 5:30-11:45 and I am not much of a morning person. Well, last week it just worked out that I was up and around in the area at 8AM so I decided to stop in and give it a try and man, I am happy that I did.

Uncle Bud’s is a real local joint. Everybody knows everybody and when I walked in it seemed like all eyes were on the new guy. I dove right in and sat at the counter directly inside the front door. Aside from the counter, the only seating options are two or three tables that seat four a piece. The first thing that hits you after you sit down is the rich smell of home cooked breakfast and freshly brewed coffee. I was greeted kindly by the waitress and she introduced herself in the way that you would when meeting someone of consequence for the first time, not like a waitress at Denny’s just trying to get through her next batch of tables. Karen kindly offered me a cup of coffee and we were off and running. Besides Karen, the only other person that was working was a very kind, happy lady working the grill named Gay.

After getting my coffee just the way I like it, Karen returned and handed me a menu and asked if I had ever eaten at Uncle Bud’s before. When I told her that it was my first time she nicely explained what sides came with each dish, as well as the various specials. I ordered Gay’s Special, a plate of homemade biscuits and gravy topped with scrambled eggs and cheese and served with a homemade sausage patty. As I patiently awaited my meal I shot the shit with some of the locals, mostly about the local Noon Lions Club as I was wearing my Lions polo for our weekly meeting.

Within about ten minutes I had a heap of biscuits covered in gravy, eggs and a hand pressed sausage patty. The biscuit-bathing gravy was rich and full of sausage chunks, and the eggs and cheese were a welcome addition. However, my favorite part of the meal was the sausage patty. This wasn’t some sad, limp little sausage patty out of a box. It was large and hand pressed, and very spicy as well. The flavor was wonderful and it was crispy from the griddle. Very few places give you a great sausage patty like this. I think that the next time I pop into Uncle Bud’s, it is going to be sausage patties and eggs.

Next time you are in the Bellflower area and are looking for a great breakfast, you need to check out Uncle Bud’s. You will be greeted like you are family, eat like you are a king, and feel like a 2 pound sausage stuffed in a 1 pound casing when you are done. When it comes to breakfast, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Until Next Time, Keep Eating Long Beach,

Cliv

Uncle Bud’s Kitchen – Myspace page

[8
["post-5507","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-food","entry
["GET
