{"id":5765,"date":"2009-08-13T14:36:00","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T14:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lbpost.com\/articles\/life\/bettye-lavette-to-appear-at-long-beach-blues-festival\/"},"modified":"2009-08-13T14:36:00","modified_gmt":"2009-08-13T14:36:00","slug":"bettye-lavette-to-appear-at-long-beach-blues-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/bettye-lavette-to-appear-at-long-beach-blues-festival","title":{"rendered":"Bettye LaVette To Appear At Long Beach Blues Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><div style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS;\" id=\":63\" class=\"ii gt\"><span style=\"font-size:10pt; line-height: 115%;\">   <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\"><img decoding=\"async\"  alt=\"\" style=\"border: 1px solid black; margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/s_image1250174496-41780.jpg\" align=\"right\">R&#038;B vocalist Bettye LaVette was a teenager living with her parents in Detroit when the burgeoning<span> <\/span>Motown sound was beginning to burge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">Born Betty Haskins in Muskegon, Michigan, she was only 16 when she warbled at a teenage dance and caught the ear of a local singer who was on the hunt for talent for an older female producer, whom Berry Gordy Jr. once credited with teaching him some of the tricks of the recording game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\u201cI was 16-years-old in Detroit and getting involved in recording was a typical thing to do. Everybody else was doing it.<span> <\/span>Everybody was making records, people were putting things to together. In \u201862, segregation was very big, so everybody knew everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">As early as 1959 came some great Detroit records that hit the top ten, \u201cYou\u2019re so Fine\u201d by the Falcons and \u201cMoney\u201d by Barrett Strong, the first Motown label record to place well on the charts.<span> <\/span>But when LaVette entered the music game in \u201862, Motown was hardly the might Hitsville U.S.A. it became.<span> <\/span>The Supremes were freshly minted from the Primettes and the Temptations were one record away from their career as the Primes.<span> <\/span>Detroit records like \u201cHello Stranger\u201d by Barbara Lewis were racing up the charts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">\u201cI knew everybody who got there start at the time.<span> <\/span>We were all in the exact same place at the very same time.<span> <\/span>Everybody was older. Except <span> <\/span>Stevie Wonder, who was younger than me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">LaVette hit the national charts with her first release, \u201cMy Man He\u2018s A Lovin\u2019 Man\u201d done in an early Ike &#038; Tina Turner style in a youthful voice she describes as sounding like Minnie Mouse.<span> <\/span>\u201cI never sounded like a woman, when I sounded like Minnie Mouse&#8230;straight to sounding like to James Brown.\u201d<span> <\/span>In fact, LaVette couldn\u2019t name any female singers she listened to in the day.<span> <\/span>\u201cLittle Willie John, Jimmy Reed, Bobby Bland and Jackie Wilson.<span> <\/span>I didn&#8217;t have any women I particularly liked, at 16.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">The hits kept on rolling on until the 1980s when she got signed by Motown, her way-back hometown label which found her working in all places, Nashville.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 10pt;\">With influences like these, LaVette refers to her 48 years of recording as influencing what she\u2019ll be doing at the upcoming Long Beach Blues Festival.<span> <\/span>\u201cIt&#8217;s from a 75 to 90 minute show.<span> <\/span>I&#8217;m covering the entire 48 years with things you\u2019d expect to hear from a woman like me,\u201d which will include the songs that got her attention at the beginning to those found in
