{"id":588,"date":"2018-08-14T16:00:20","date_gmt":"2018-08-14T23:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=999914445"},"modified":"2018-08-14T16:00:20","modified_gmt":"2018-08-14T23:00:20","slug":"these-local-artists-will-break-boundaries-in-professional-artist-fellows-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/these-local-artists-will-break-boundaries-in-professional-artist-fellows-exhibition","title":{"rendered":"These local artists will break boundaries in Professional Artist Fellows exhibition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A painter, sculptor, ceramicist and jeweler will explore the nuances behind the word \u201cboundary\u201d in an upcoming art exhibition in Downtown Long Beach, set to open Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Stories of Boundaries<\/em>, the culminating exhibition for the Arts Council for Long Beach\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/artslb.org\/programs\/grants\/professional-artist-fellowship\/\">2017-2018 Professional Artist Fellows<\/a>, an award given annually to exemplary local artists, will showcase the works of the four awardees: <a href=\"http:\/\/artslb.org\/artists\/kristin-beeler\/\">Kristin Beeler<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/artslb.org\/artists\/jose-m-loza\/\">Jose Loza<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/artslb.org\/artists\/brittany-mojo-2\/\">Brittany Mojo<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/artslb.org\/artists\/gerardo-monterrubio\/\">Gerardo Monterrubio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition will encourage viewers to \u201cengage with their inner dialogue\u201d and contemplate how they communicate boundaries within different communities, stated Arts Council Executive Director Griselda Suarez.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA \u2018boundary\u2019 is a real or imagined line that marks an edge or limit,\u201d the announcement explained. \u201cBoundaries separate spaces, objects, and ideas; they mark the end of one thing and the beginning of another. The fellows use their work to tell narratives about boundaries\u2014be they points in time or marking human experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/joseM.loza\/videos\/10155738704106915\/<\/p>\n<p>Described as an entry point to migration narratives,<a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/jose-loza-mural\/\"> Loza<\/a>\u2019s paintings and murals approach stories of family through both separation and reunion, exploring the boundaries between languages, cultures, generations and borders. Loza has painted murals all over town for projects including the Creative Corridor Challenge.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BmcF4XYBSy-\/<\/p>\n<p>Mojo manipulates material into objects resembling chairs, lamps, tools and more, as an investigation of gendered work and confronts the hierarchies between sculpture and craft, fine art and design. Mojo\u2019s work for the exhibition questions the role of the gallery as related to the studio, the artist and the viewer. Mojo is a founding member of an all-female contemporary art collective, <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/grab-bag-studio\/\">Grab Bag Studio<\/a>\u00a0and currently teaches ceramics and sculpture at Orange Coast College and LaSierra University.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BmR6ZvvgZMO\/<\/p>\n<p>Monterrubio\u2019s ceramic works are an anthropological investigation, according to the arts council. His \u201ccontemporary artifacts\u201d are an interpretation of cultural paradigms, socio-political practices, mythologies and the human experience. Monterrubio, who recently curated Praxis at <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/life\/arts-culture\/art-exchange-merges-with-long-beach-museum-of-art-foundation-community-arts-campus-to-be-renamed-lbmax\/\">LBMAx<\/a>\u00a0, teaches ceramics at Long Beach City College and has work in the permanent collection of LACMA.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_999914449\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-999914449\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-999914449 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/ARKristinBeelerScarMapofaWoman.3D-768x1024-969x1292.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-999914449\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scar Map of a Woman.3D (2016) by Kristin Beeler: Digital image of scarring used as embroidery map. Her work in Stories of Boundaries is a grouping of objects and images that touch upon the body\u2019s psychological boundaries, according to the announcement. Beeler is head of Jewelry and Metalwork at Long Beach City College.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Professional Artist Fellow grant program helps highlight and applaud the work of our local creatives that have chosen this expressive path,\u201d Arts Council President Tasha Hunter said in a statement. \u201cI always look forward to this time of year because it brings forth welcomed excitement and anticipation for what\u2019s to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The opening reception for Stories of Boundaries will take place on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. It will be on view through Sept. 28.
