Photo by Kate Karp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What could be more giggleworthy than a field full of dachshunds at a race track, clad in racing colors, tripping over their little legs to do whatever they please or trying to please their humans? For the past 22 years, cooing and oohing fans have packed the\u00a0Los Alamitos Race Course for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.losalamitos.com\/wienernationals\/landing.aspx\">Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals<\/a>, sponsored by the eponymous\u2014or perhaps epuppymous\u2014hot-dog chain.<\/p>\n<p>In its 23rd season at Los Al, officials expect the house to be packed again to cheer on the nearly 90 little-legged sausages from up and down the California coast and inland to the Mohave. Check out the little freckled legs! Photo by Kate Karp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two little Long Beach girls are contenders: Bella Evans, aka Scoopski, and Poppy Denny. Both dachshunds came with their human companions\/trainers to work out at the practice runs on Monday, July 16.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese practices help a lot,\u201d said Orlando Gutierrez, the race course\u2019s marketing director. \u201cThey give the owner a better idea of what the dogs can do during the day of the race. The little dog had joined the Evans family a few months ago when she was snuck in under the pretense of being a Rottweiler puppy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family and I attended this event for the first time ever in 2017, and my daughter Sara and I were hooked on those linky little dogs!\u201d Paula Evans said. \u201cSara asked for one for her birthday, but my husband insisted on another big dog. So I brought home a \u2018Rottweiler puppy.\u2019 Even though she had all the right makings in all the right places, my husband was suspicious when he saw her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take Paula\u2019s husband Jim long to figure it out, but by then he\u2019d fallen hard. He handed Bella her silly nickname, which he\u2019d gotten from a random episode of \u201cImpractical Joker.\u201d Both Jim and Sara were at the Monday practices, and Sara shared Bella\u2019s rigorous, specialized training routine: \u201cMy mom holds a squeak toy in her palm, and I let her go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does Sara think Bella will win? Photo by Kate Karp<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If Bella does win the championship heat, she\u2019ll take home a trophy, a blankie and $1,000, which will buy a lot of kibble and squeaky toys. It\u2019s all donated by the Los Alamitos Race Course. She&#8217;ll get her own little condo, too&#8211;a new doghouse donated by Wienerschnitzel.<\/p>\n<p>There will be eight of the little racers in each of the 10 heats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try not to put entrants from the same city into the same race,\u201d Gutierrez said. \u201cSometimes over the years, there are a few rivalries or friendships, so we try to play along with that. We\u2019ll place dogs who have never raced before together, like a maiden race, and we might have a few special events. But in the end, they have to win the race and be in the championship race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Wiener Nationals champion, Baby Bo, a 2 \u00bd-year-old black-and-tan challenger, will be racing again this year. Photo courtesy of Los Alamitos Race Course.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s big and strong, so we\u2019ll see if anyone can beat him!\u201d Gutierrez said.<\/p>\n<p>Poppy Denny seemed to take the whole thing in stride, as far as a dachshund can stride, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in it to win it,\u201d said her mom, Shaina.<\/p>\n<p>Like Bella, it\u2019s Poppy\u2019s first time at Los Al but not her first gig as a racer. She competed at 6 months old at another meet at Old World Huntington Beach and did well, according to Shaina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was lightweight and small compared to some of the stronger dogs, but she held her own,\u201d Shaina said.<\/p>\n<p>Poppy Denny\u2019s routine involves a lot of runs, a lot of walks, and following Shaina on her bike in a safe location.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70548\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70548\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-70548 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Poppy-970x1293.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poppy Denny, with Shaina&#8211;in it to win it! Photo by Kate Karp.<em style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>No matter which little shnookums is declared Fastest Wiener in the West, the real winners will be the cats and dogs at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbacc.org\/\">Seal Beach Animal Care Center<\/a>. SBACC\u2019s animal shelter keeps pets until they can find them a home, and it costs some money.<\/p>\n<p>Last year\u2019s event raised $18,000 through ticket sales and T-shirt sales on the day of the event, adding to the more than $250,000 that the Wiener Nationals have raised for the Care Center.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you\u2019ll want to come, too, for every leg of the race, as short as the legs may be. The races start at 6:30PM, with the championship heat at 9:30PM. Get there early, as seating is first come, first served. Parking is free; you can buy your ticket on the day of the event for only $3.00, and if you\u2019re 17 or younger, you get in for free!
