We told them, &#8216;Fine\u2014we\u2019re leaving,&#8217; but they decided they wanted us out in five days and decided to involve lawyers to evict us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11217\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachize.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bigmistas-2-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/>Phyllis goes to talk about taking them to court in return\u2014&#8221;The old me would do that,&#8221; she said\u2014but the reality is that they just plan on paying the cost of a breaking a lease so &#8220;we can move on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those plans to move on include stepping out of the state to start a new business, though Phyllis&#8217; concept of business does not involve food. As for Neil, Bigmista himself, he wants to remain in food but also remains uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I know people want to know why and the short answer is because we\u2019re grown and we can [move on],&#8221; Phyllis said. &#8220;The long answer may be a bit more complicated but not much different. Our house is up for sale. We\u2019re tossing or selling whatever we can and traveling light. If Bigmista would let me give stuff away, I\u2019d be done real quick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When the Strawders were first eying to open a brick-and-mortar four years ago, they were initially going to open in DTLA at the Medallion Building at 4th and Main. But plans fell through\u2014so they set their smokers upon the land of Long Beach, bringing an LA icon into the territory in such a fashion that regional media went nuts.<\/p>\n<p><em>Los Angeles Magazine\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lamag.com\/digestblog\/bigmistas-bbq-headed-long-beach-dtla\/\">called<\/a> it &#8220;bad news for Downtown but good news for Long Beach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11218\" src=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachize.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bigmistas--300x250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"250\" \/>The\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times\u00a0<\/em>lamented the loss of a Downtown barbecue staple, telling patrons that they would have to take the trek to Bludso&#8217;s (which closed its Compton location in 2016).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/worthit\/we-ate-13-vs-68-american-bbq-ribs-to-see-which-was-worth?utm_term=.vpqVR6bzkz#.ujOvR9y6D6\"><em>Buzzfeed\u00a0<\/em>pitted Bigmista&#8217;s ribs against fancier, far more expensive ribs<\/a> of others joints in a contest, ending with the fact that Bigmista&#8217;s was simply the best.<\/p>\n<p>Their passion resulted in just flat-out amazing food\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/2rxCuwN\">food, mind you, I called some of the most underrated in Long Beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bigmista&#8217;s was a force\u2014but one that has, unfortunately, ended in California.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suffice it to say, it has been a pleasure serving everyone, even the complainers,&#8221; Phyllis said. &#8220;We may have worked long hours, bitched, moaned, and ached\u2014but we would not have traded this experience for the world. I love each and every one of the folks that made our business a success and, God willing, we may return to Long Beach.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Bigmista\u2019s Barbecue &amp; Sammie Shop is located at 3444 N Los Coyotes Diagonal and will remain open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 11AM to 8PM, and Sunday from 11AM to 4AM.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Love Long Beach and food?\u00a0Click here to scroll through the archives. **** Photos courtesy of Neil Strawder.
