{"id":811,"date":"2018-04-20T18:20:38","date_gmt":"2018-04-21T01:20:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=64771"},"modified":"2018-04-20T18:20:38","modified_gmt":"2018-04-21T01:20:38","slug":"long-beach-naacp-branch-honors-family-of-intergenerational-lawyers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/long-beach-naacp-branch-honors-family-of-intergenerational-lawyers","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach NAACP Branch Honors Family of Intergenerational Lawyers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Long Beach branch of the NAACP on Wednesday evening honored a family of intergenerational lawyers for their work in promoting social justice and mentoring future lawyers, especially those of color.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family\u2019s six lawyers are headed by the late civil rights activist and longtime Compton Councilman Maxcy Filer, who the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1991\/09\/13\/news\/bar-man-s-pride-persistence-conquer-california-bar-exam-s-most-famous-losing.html\">New York Times wrote<\/a> about in 1981 for passing the California Bar Exam after 48 tries since 1967.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the family of lawyers consists of grandson Lance Filer who has a private law practice in Long Beach, as well as Maxcy\u2019s sons Kelvin who has served his entire judicial career at the Compton Courthouse, and Anthony who is the directing attorney for the Community Legal Services Office in both Compton and Norwalk. Kelvin\u2019s daughter Kree became the first female lawyer of the family when she passed the bar in 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The family was honored during the local NAACP\u2019s annual ABA Law Day program at the offices of Keesal, Young &amp; Logan in downtown Long Beach.
