{"id":81615,"date":"2024-02-15T11:45:55","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T19:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=81615"},"modified":"2024-02-15T13:17:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T21:17:07","slug":"hells-kitchen-runner-up-transforms-remix-kitchen-into-an-italian-bar-concept-honoring-his-mother","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/hells-kitchen-runner-up-transforms-remix-kitchen-into-an-italian-bar-concept-honoring-his-mother","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Hell\u2019s Kitchen&#8217; runner-up transforms Remix Kitchen into an Italian bar concept honoring his mother"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remix Kitchen within LBX is looking a little different these days after a partnership with \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen\u201d runner-up Chef Johnathan Benvenuti transformed the space into Bar Becky, a new Italian concept pop-up that could become a permanent fixture.<\/p>\n<p>The pop-up had its first night on Valentine\u2019s Day offering a $75 per person tasting menu with small bites, an appetizer, a pasta and protein dish that is finished off with dessert. It will run on <a href=\"https:\/\/remixlb.com\/\">select dates<\/a> through the end of the month with seating times from 5 to 8 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Remix Kitchen was opened by Mix Mix Hospitality Group founder Chef Ross Pangilinan in 2020. Cordova<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been thinking about rebranding Remix for a while now,\u201d Pangilinan said. \u201cIt\u2019s a good way for me and for people who want to open restaurants to grow, I can\u2019t be at all these places at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was perfect timing for Benvenuti, who at just 30-years-old was returning home from a successful run on the popular Fox show \u201cHell\u2019s Kitchen\u201d where Chef Gordon Ramsey puts contestants through a bootcamp to find his next executive chef.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cComing off the show, I had high ambitions for what I wanted to do,\u201d Benvenuti said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of crazy me and Chef Ross\u2019 paths had never crossed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benvenuti received a text on his flight home to Huntington Beach after filming the show\u2019s finale from business partner and bar director Jason Scarborough, who said Pangilinan may have an opportunity for them to take over Remix.<\/p>\n<p>Scarborough is well known in Orange County circles, heading up wine and bar programs at notable restaurants like the now-closed Ortica in Costa Mesa and chef\u2019s table concept Trust in Downtown Santa Ana.<\/p>\n<p>When the group came together, it was a perfect match, they said.<\/p>\n<p>The new Bar Becky concept is drawn from Benvenuti\u2019s Italian-American childhood, and named after his mother, who recently passed away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe grew up and food was our love language,\u201d Benvenuti said. \u201cMy earliest memories are cooking with her. With Ross now, it just feels surreal that I\u2019m able to share that with Long Beach and express my mom\u2019s hospitality through this restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His mother would\u2019ve been in the kitchen of the new restaurant, Benvenuti said. But her presence will still be felt as he plans to include family photos in the restaurant and work toward it being a family affair by bringing his brother, Anthony, to work under Scarborough.<\/p>\n<p>And while the safer bet would have been to open a restaurant in Orange County, an area he grew up in, Benvenuti said he\u2019s excited for the challenge of making a name for himself in a city that he says is undergoing a food revolution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing from Orange County, you have that curtain, but Long Beach is such a creative space,\u201d Benvenuti said. \u201cIt feels like a perfect landing spot for what I\u2019m trying to do. I\u2019m planning to be here for the long run.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the month of February, the group is still figuring out exactly what the space will look like and offer.
