The first event in the 0.0 series put on by co-curators and Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) alumnae Yasmine Lindskog, Katie Istvan and Lainey Atwood will feature both performance and visual arts.

The three artists have curated a series of events to take place throughout the year, all at SPACE853. For this first iteration, choreographers Istvan and Lindskog will present new work, 0.1, in collaboration with visual artist Atwood and performing artists Alvaro Nuñez and Jack Taylor. Other creatives involved include sound artist Piksel and various local DJs.

“For this particular performance collaboration the artists involved met each other their freshman year at CSULB six years ago,” the three stated. “Since then, we have all dispersed and discovered our own art. The inevitable rhythm of creation drew us back together again, our ideas coincided and this series came alive.”

Lindskog, a Swedish-American, is a performer, choreographer and educator with a BFA in dance from CSULB and an MA in contemporary dance from the London Contemporary Dance School. A Maui native, Istvan is also a choreographer, performer and educator. She earned her BA in dance at CSULB and now works with Rebecca Lemme|Acts of Matter and Keith Johnson/Dancers in Los Angeles.

For Atwood, the Long Beach native of the trio who recently earned her BFA in drawing and painting from CSULB, the local art scene is always changing as a “supportive community that encourages experimentation and collaboration,” she said. Known as the “painter in the window”, her work can be found in various local small businesses around town.

“My work is always changing in its form—it is in windows, on canvas, and now on moving bodies. It stands out in motion and in colors, which parallels to my relationship with Long Beach,” Atwood said.

The group came up with the name 0.0 series as a way to give their consecutive shows room to progress and take shape organically.

“Initially, we sort of became fed up with labels and boxing things into categories,” the curators sent in a group statement. “The number 0 insinuates a base, nothing, neutrality, the bottom, etc. We thought this was a humbling way to approach art and a reminder that this is where we start. As artists emerging out of Long Beach, this is where we started and where we will continue to return again and again.”

Themes of connectivity, cycles and oneness were embraced for this upcoming show. Throughout the series, guests can expect to be surprised, to be involved with the work and to see something new. Not only will there be exhibitions, but workshops, performances and more will be offered to encourage “experimentation and process-based art making that is responsive to our social and urban environment,” the co-curators said.

“As emerging artists, our work takes us to new places and it is always evolving from those places,” said Lindskog, Istvan and Atwood. “No matter where we go, we come back to Long Beach where we began.”

Tickets for the inaugural 0.0 series event can be purchased in advance for $10 via the link here and are $15 at the door. The event runs from 6:45PM to 9:30PM.

SPACE853 is located at 853 Pine Avenue.

On Saturday a new platform for local emerging interdisciplinary artists will pop up in downtown Long Beach at SPACE853.

[4
453
["post-817","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-art","tag-space853","entry
["GET
