April is the month dedicated to planet Earth, and there are many ways to show your gratitude for plants, animals and the natural beauty in Long Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earth Day, officially marked on April 22, began in 1970 to draw attention to environmental causes. This year’s Earth Month activities will be organized around the theme “Planet vs. Plastics.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The city has a full calendar<\/a> of Earth Month activities. A few of them include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earth Day Community Clean-up and Week of Action Kick-off: <\/strong>Join the Long Beach Health Department, community groups and other city departments at a day filled with education, music, photos, giveaways and activities that help make the community a more beautiful place. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon on April 13 at DeForest Park, 6175 De Forest Ave. Learn more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earth Day Tree Planting: <\/strong>Celebrate Earth Day by helping to plant 40 trees in the Washington neighborhood, in partnership with the California Climate Action Corps. The event is from 9 a.m. to noon on April 20. Registration is required for this event as capacity is limited. For information and to register, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Learn to Compost Workshop: <\/strong>Learn how to turn food scraps and yard debris into a valuable soil amendment for your garden or landscape. Get tips on setting up and maintaining a backyard compost bin and worm bin and learn what materials can or cannot be placed in a compost bin and how to effectively use finished compost. The workshop is 10 a.m. to noon on April 20. For information and to register, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Annual City Nature Challenge: <\/strong>Participate in this internationally celebrated event by observing local flora and fauna and sharing those observations with other cities across the globe via the iNaturalist app<\/a>. Join in person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 27 at Willow Springs Park to explore the trails and help identify wildlife.
