{"id":82664,"date":"2024-05-30T12:47:01","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T19:47:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=82664"},"modified":"2024-05-30T13:46:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T20:46:31","slug":"wide-eyes-open-palms-closing-reopen-good-day-cafe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/wide-eyes-open-palms-closing-reopen-good-day-cafe","title":{"rendered":"Wide Eyes Open Palms is changing hands, but it will remain a welcoming LGBTQ space, owners say"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Wide Eyes Open Palms, a well-known LGBTQ-run caf\u00e9 on Retro Row, will be closing down for two weeks in early June to rebrand as Good Day Cafe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The last day of service at Wide Eyes Open Palms, which is on Cherry Avenue just north of Fourth Street, will be Sunday, June 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Angie Evans, the coffee maestro, and chef Kat McIver decided to pass along ownership of the caf\u00e9 to another queer couple, Lindsey Mark and her wife Nikki, in order to spend more time with family and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we were like, \u2018OK it\u2019s time to move on,\u2019 and we wanted to pass it on to someone who wanted to continue the energy of being a queer space,\u201d Evans said. \u201cEspecially with all the anti-trans, anti-LGBTQ laws that are going on all across the country. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Organization was at the forefront of success for Wide Eyes Open Palms \u2014 known to regulars as WeOp \u2014 because the staff had to make the most of the 600 square-foot space, Evans said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evans and McIver gained a following by selling coffee and pastries at various farmers&#8217; markets around Long Beach over 10 years ago before opening the caf\u00e9 in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the couple will no longer be actively involved at the caf\u00e9, they live nearby and still plan to visit the employees and the new owners after some time away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One part of Wide Eyes Open Palms will remain irreplaceable. When the couple was initially renovating the space to open in 2017, they held a blessing party during which friends and customers from the farmers market days were invited to leave items in a trench that was dug for plumbing. Those items included feathers, crystals and notes containing positive messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When Good Day Cafe opens in late June, the hours of operation will be from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday through Monday.
