Please see our policy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/about\/republishing-our-work\/\">here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A passion for using farm-fresh produce originally brought chef Eugene Santiago to Long Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was helping out regularly at a farm in Sierra Madre when he realized he wanted to reconnect with the ability to use hyperlocal produce with his food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, his food, under the name Baryo, can be found at Union@Compound, <a href=\"https:\/\/unionlb.com\/\">a restaurant accompanying an art gallery<\/a> on Coronado Avenue just south of East 14th Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--80)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8de92ddb wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-support-long-beach-food-coverage\">Support Long Beach food coverage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Boost your community&#8217;s voice; donate to the Post&#8217;s restaurant coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<givebutter-widget id=\"LeXqEj\"><\/givebutter-widget>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Baryo is Filipino for the Spanish word \u201cbarrio\u201d meaning village or neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the mission statement on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatbaryo.com\/about\">Baryo\u2019s website<\/a> contains Santiago\u2019s vision for his food: \u201cIt\u2019s important to us to work towards the idea that food can be grown, cooked and shared within a small proximity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While doing pop-ups to serve food at farmer\u2019s markets around Long Beach, he encountered Farm Lot 59, a 0.6-acre urban farm on California Avenue north of East Willow Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the pandemic, Sasha Kanno \u2013 who runs Farm Lot 59 \u2013 lost a lot of her restaurant partners and had an overabundance of produce.
