{"id":85441,"date":"2025-04-10T13:25:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T20:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=85441"},"modified":"2025-04-10T13:29:32","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T20:29:32","slug":"midnight-oil-long-beach-dim-sum-bar-rosemallows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/food\/midnight-oil-long-beach-dim-sum-bar-rosemallows","title":{"rendered":"Two accomplished restaurateurs bring dim sum and creative cocktails to Downtown Long Beach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Although he\u2019s the son of Chinese immigrants, starting a bar with Chinese decor wasn\u2019t Leonard Chan\u2019s original plan for Midnight Oil, the new restaurant and lounge he just opened at Long Beach Boulevard and Third Street in Downtown Long Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, Chan said, he wanted to open an Izakaya concept specializing in Japanese fare, but when he learned from <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/food\/carved-ice-handcrafted-cocktails-tokyo-noir-is-long-beachs-japanese-speakeasy\/\">Tokyo Noir<\/a> bar director Kevin Lee that an Izakaya restaurant was in the works nearby from chef <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/yoyaman\/\">Yoya Takahashi<\/a>, Chan switched gears to an \u201capothecary-themed\u201d bar serving a variety of shareable Chinese dishes \u2014 better known as dim sum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Offerings served on compostable pressed bamboo plates range from $5 for four sesame balls to $17 for a shareable shrimp-fried rice plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n    <a href=\"#XHECJQES\">Link<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dim sum offerings include pork and shrimp shumai, har gow shrimp dumplings, barbecue char sui pork buns, pan-fried radish cake along with pork ribs with black bean sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shareable options include Taiwanese popcorn chicken, mushroom salad and shishito peppers, among others. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He met his fianc\u00e9e at Steelcraft about eight years ago and the couple moved near the legendary Long Beach bar Joe Jost\u2019s in September 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan said he had been looking to open something in Long Beach and when he saw the building that used to house the bar Rosemallows become available, he knew it was time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t hard to convince his collaborator, Peter Ross, to open the bar with him. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Less adventurous choices include the Persimmon &amp; Apples, a twist on a Japanese highball, and the Strawberry Way \u2013 made with Campari, sweet vermouth, strawberry and verjus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ross and Chan decided to use the 25 taps already in place from Rosemallows. Fourteen of the cocktails on the menu come served out of a tap, four with forced carbonation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chan tested the concept just over a year prior at a bar he started in Tustin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt turned out to work pretty well. The cocktails are always consistent,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair is also working on two other bar concepts contained within Midnight Oil. Cordova.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Within a few weeks, the tiki bar will transition to a \u201cCreature from the Black Lagoon\u201d theme with decor and drinks based on the 1954 black-and-white horror film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Long Beach Boulevard side of the building, they are constructing a third bar space that Chan said will resemble an opium den.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That bar will also offer food, with more emphasis on small bowls of noodles and skewers, Chan said, adding that it\u2019s a concept he has \u201cbeen sitting on for about seven years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quarter of the menu will be \u201ctweaks from family recipes,\u201d Chan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite having most of his bars in Orange County, Chan said the encouragement he\u2019s received so far in Long Beach has been overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s just been this groundswell of support,\u201d Chan said. \u201cI\u2019ve never seen this in the 17 years that I\u2019ve been doing this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>Midnight Oil, 255 Long Beach Blvd., is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 4:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 4:30 p.m. to midnight.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Midnight Oil has taken over the former Rosemallows location on Third Street.
