{"id":861,"date":"2018-03-27T17:49:36","date_gmt":"2018-03-28T00:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/?p=63938"},"modified":"2018-03-27T17:49:36","modified_gmt":"2018-03-28T00:49:36","slug":"long-beach-hotel-worker-honored-as-los-angeles-county-woman-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/long-beach-hotel-worker-honored-as-los-angeles-county-woman-of-the-year","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach Hotel Worker Honored as Los Angeles County Woman of the Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A local hotel worker who has spent years advocating for safe working conditions was honored earlier this month as Woman of the Year in Los Angeles County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">County Supervisor Janice Hahn chose Juana Melara\u2014who as a Norwalk resident and employee of The Westin in downtown Long Beach both lives and works in the Fourth District\u2014for her efforts to secure worker protections in Long Beach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melara\u2019s activism also earned her a spot as one of Time Magazine\u2019s persons of the year in 2017 when she was recognized as a \u201csilence breaker\u201d for coming forward with her own story of being sexually harassed at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/lbpost.com\/news\/long-beach-hotel-worker-included-in-time-magazine-s-person-of-the-year-award\/<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know that with Juana\u2019s courage, organizing skills, and perseverance\u2014justice will prevail and hotel workers throughout LA County will one day be safer because of her hard work,\u201d said Hahn during the awards luncheon held at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles on March 12. \u201cThe silence may be broken but our most pressing problems are far from being fixed. To all of the women in the audience, I hope you\u2019ll take a page out of Juana\u2019s book and remember that you are not alone.
