{"id":86907,"date":"2025-09-08T13:53:49","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T20:53:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=86907"},"modified":"2025-09-08T13:54:25","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T20:54:25","slug":"plantiitas-tariffs-slower-sales-closing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/news\/business\/small-business\/plantiitas-tariffs-slower-sales-closing","title":{"rendered":"Long Beach plant store owners say tariffs, slower sales may force them to close"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>With rising rent and tariffs hitting the small business hard, Plantiitas, a plant shop on Retro Row, is asking for help to keep its doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, after talking with two employees who have been with the business since it opened in October 2020, co-owner Kevin Alcaraz said he decided to \u201cput my pride to the side\u201d and announce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/3r7qc-help-us-keep-this-dream-alive?cdn-cache=0\">a fundraiser<\/a> for the business on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are not asking for a handout but asking to help us keep this dream alive,\u201d Alcaraz and his husband, Anthony Diaz, wrote on the fundraiser. Courtesy of Plantiitas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After making his first sale to a neighbor, Alcaraz saw a chance to create a plant store that doubled as a community space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plantiitas currently hosts everything from paint nights to yoga sessions and embroidery workshops. Every month, the shop has drag bingo and a mental health workshop that offers visitors an opportunity to meet a therapist in the shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with their fundraiser, Alcaraz and Diaz are asking the public to come to the shop\u2019s gatherings, host an event with them, and share their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/plantiitas\/?hl=en\">Instagram<\/a> with friends and family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcaraz said he doesn\u2019t have a timeline in mind for deciding whether or not to close the shop, but he is hoping to keep Plantiitas open for the holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Plantiitas is at 2011 E. 4th St, Long Beach.
