{"id":87060,"date":"2025-09-25T04:55:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T11:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/hi-lo\/?p=87060"},"modified":"2025-09-25T08:45:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T15:45:14","slug":"theater-news-predictor-at-the-garage-theatre-focuses-on-the-erased-woman-behind-home-pregnancy-tests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/hi-lo\/art\/theater-news-predictor-at-the-garage-theatre-focuses-on-the-erased-woman-behind-home-pregnancy-tests","title":{"rendered":"Theater news: \u2018Predictor\u2019 at The Garage Theatre focuses on the erased woman behind home pregnancy tests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If a woman today thinks she\u2019s pregnant, she can buy an over-the-counter pregnancy test and get confirmation within minutes without needing to see anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than 50 years ago, women had to make an appointment with a doctor and then have their urine analyzed by a lab to see if it contained higher levels of a pregnancy hormone, potentially waiting weeks for results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though home pregnancy tests were first marketed to women in the late 1970s, the technology had existed for decades, restricted by pharmaceutical companies that entrusted it exclusively to doctors \u2014 90% of whom were male at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting tests directly into the hands of women \u2014 who could then know results within a couple of hours in their own homes \u2014 is thanks to Margaret \u201cMeg\u201d Crane, a graphic designer you may never have heard of who worked for a pharmaceutical company in New Jersey in the 1960s and saw that the tests they made for doctors could easily be used by women in private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though Crane designed a simple test kit for women in 1967 when she was 26, it took years to get FDA approval for the device before it could be sold to women as Predictor in 1977. Photo by Diana Kaufmann.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Crane was only officially recognized as the inventor of the home pregnancy test in 2012 when she spoke up after a New York Times article about such tests failed to mention her. Photo by Diana Kaufmann.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMeg\u2019s story demanded telling and Jennifer Blackmer\u2019s weird and wonderful script reminded me of all the things I loved most \u2014 and missed most \u2014 about theater,\u201d Variz says. \u201cAt a time when every odd was stacked against her, Meg said \u2018yes\u2019 to curiosity, to creativity, to love and finally to the sacrifice that would ultimately erase her name from history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Variz also met with Crane last spring in New York, sitting in \u201cawe\u201d of her while being further inspired to direct the play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe spent more time talking about the present than the past, recognizing the battles that we thought long won \u2014 for choice, for privacy, for bodily autonomy \u2014 were being waged again and against the same insidious forces,\u201d Variz recalls. \u201cMeg reminded me that Predictor wasn\u2019t just about pregnancy, but about power.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s because part of Crane\u2019s battle was convincing male-dominated pharmaceutical and medical industries during sexist and even misogynistic times, which some find continue today, that women should be able to test their own bodies for what\u2019s happening to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Crane\u2019s character says in the play, she\u2019s \u201cReady to set the record straight, ready to ask for my due and claim my space.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i>\u201cPredictor\u201d continues through Oct. 11 at The Garage Theatre, 251 E. Seventh St., with shows Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets are $28 or $23 for students, seniors, teachers and military members, with two-for-one tickets available on Thursdays.
