So Staples gave haters an alternative: send him into early retirement.<\/p>\n<p>Staples said raising $2 million would be enough for him to \u201cshut the fuck up forever,\u201d claiming naysayers would \u201cnever hear from him again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#GTFOMD\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/258872772?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Other stipulations attached to the $2 million would include Staples moving to Palmdale, buying a Honda, supplying a year\u2019s worth of soups for the \u201chomies locked down,\u201d as well as purchasing a puppy.<\/p>\n<p>Since the #GTFOMD GoFundMe was created Wednesday, March 7, only $2,022 was raised to see the 24-year-old hang up his mic forever.<\/p>\n<p>Staples cancelled the campaign for his complete disappearance on Wednesday, tweeting that he would refund \u201call the little people with big voices,\u201d and in a generous gesture toward his hometown, stated he would match the donations and give the full amount to the Michelle Obama Neighborhood Library.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am also personally matching the donations made and donating the full amount to the Michelle Obama library of Norf Long Beach&#8230; in honor of you citch ass niggas. I love you all, good day. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/gtfomd?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#gtfomd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; vince (@vincestaples) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/vincestaples\/status\/974094955399471104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 15, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It turns out the GoFundMe was more of a promotional ploy for the artist\u2019s latest single, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/vincestaples.lnk.to\/GetTheFuckOffMyDick\/\">Get The Fuck Off My Dick<\/a>\u201d, which he released following the launch of the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>And while the press plays right into his hands (case in point), it&#8217;s worth noting that GTFOMD seems to be a direct response to Staples\u2019 critics, a declaration of his art\u2019s independence from the media\u2019s criticism and promotional value, and a commentary on the role music journalism has played in his career.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-63446\" src=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/GTFOMD-970x970.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps the biggest critique of him, especially over the past year, has been that his interviews actually slap harder \u2014 to borrow one of Staples&#8217; staples \u2014 than his music,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/allsongs\/2018\/03\/10\/592119892\/in-promising-to-go-away-vince-staples-reveals-another-strong-play-to-stay\">writes Rodney Carmichael for NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPress is tryna block my blessings, no more talking to Vince \/ NPR or XXL, man, I can&#8217;t tell which is which,\u201d Staples raps in GTFOMD. \u201cMissed the mark, I think my label need a marketin\u2019 switch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GTFOMD may be shameless self promotion, or it may be Staples\u2019 earnest commentary on the state of music journalism.
