Do. newsletter to get it in your inbox.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer seems perfect for a crazy, comedic farce like Long Beach Shakespeare Company\u2019s upcoming production of Oscar Wilde\u2019s \u201cThe Importance of Being Earnest.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And like icing on an ice-cream cake, the theater is updating the play\u2019s 1895 Victorian style to a flamboyant early-1980s New Romantic look, influenced by the likes of musicians Adam Ant and Grace Jones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wilde\u2019s play is a witty, tangled comedy-of-manners directed by Rebekah Walendzak Slepski, who also teaches sketch comedy at the renowned improv theater The Second City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n    <a href=\"#XHECJQES\">Link<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The play centers on Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, two young men whose invented identities create a whirlwind of romantic complications, social absurdities and family revelations, the theater says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the characters and social rules of the play remain Victorian, the visuals will be \u201cbolder, brighter and more theatrical,\u201d according to the theater, where London becomes a world of style, observation and carefully curated appearances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the countryside town of Woolton offers a dreamier landscape of romance, imagination and possibility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWilde\u2019s comedy is not a museum piece,\u201d says Slepski. \u201cIt is alive with questions about identity, performance, self-invention, love and the courage required to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Against the rigid social norms of the time, the play\u2019s characters invent names, personas, histories and excuses in order to move more freely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-89346\" srcset=\"https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-86x108.jpg 86w, https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5-400x500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/img.lbpost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/07\/09124334\/lb-shakespeare-1-506292-dsbqbmrt-600579-24BJqfg5.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Promo poster for Long Beach Shakespeare Company&#8217;s &#8220;The Importance of Being Earnest.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone is wearing a mask,\u201d the theater says, and the play begs questions about how we present ourselves. Who gets to define us? What stories do we tell in order to belong? What happens when the persona we invent is closer to the truth than the identity we were given?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This visually updated production echoes Musical Theatre West\u2019s musically <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/eat-see-do-2\/see\/theater-news-joseph-and-the-amazing-technicolor-dreamcoat-gets-a-modern-reboot-at-musical-theatre-west\/\">modernized<\/a> \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u201d upcoming at the Carpenter Center, as well as Long Beach Shakespeare Company\u2019s own embrace of innovation in its recent \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/eat-see-do-2\/do\/theater-news-raw-violent-infused-with-love-how-the-director-describes-long-beach-shakespeares-antony-and-cleopatra\/\">Antony and Cleopatra<\/a>\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/eat-see-do-2\/do\/theater-news-with-12-plays-debuting-the-new-works-festival-lets-you-see-artists-crafting-productions-of-the-future\/\">New Works Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its current \u201cThe Importance of Being Earnest\u201d should be a fun mashup of old and new. As the theater describes, \u201cVictorian England provides the structure. The New Romantics provide the attitude.
