In England, the preferred method for capital punishment was hanging, though it was officially banned in 1965 and effectively ended in 1969.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before that, though, hanging people apparently took some skill. Harry Wade, the \u201csecond-best hangman in England,\u201d is the focus of Irish playwright Martin McDonagh\u2019s award-winning 2015 dark comedy \u201cHangmen,\u201d at the Long Beach Playhouse through Sept. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the play\u2019s characters are fictitious, they are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorktheatreguide.com\/theatre-news\/news\/the-true-history-that-inspired-hangmen-on-broadway\">inspired<\/a> by real hangmen of the time and place, and a potential miscarriage of justice that helped lead to the abolition of capital punishment in England.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"text-align: center\">\n    <a href=\"#XHECJQES\">Link<\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The play begins in 1963 with Harry hanging a man who proclaims his innocence right to the end and curses Harry for executing him anyway. Flash-forward to 1965 and Harry owns a pub with his wife and teenage daughter in the town of Oldham, where he is locally famous for being such a good hangman.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the government has just abolished hanging that day, and everyone is eager to hear what Harry has to say about it \u2014 including a creepy stranger in town named Mooney.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Executive director Madison Mooney \u2014 no relation to the creepy stranger \u2014 said the Playhouse has staged a few of McDonagh\u2019s plays over the years, including \u201cThe Pillowman\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latheatrix.com\/post\/long-beach-playhouse-s-lilting-the-cripple-of-inishmaan-amuses-darkly\">The Cripple of Inishmaan<\/a>,\u201d and locals love them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"HANGMEN Preview Clip - &quot;It&amp;apos;s not every day they abolish hanging...&quot;\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z_tLzSta5gk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey always get great reviews from audiences and critics,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd his shows are perfect for our upstairs Studio Theatre, which has a reputation for shows with an edge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean Gray, the Playhouse\u2019s artistic director, credits the playwright for creating a \u201ccorrosively funny black comedy,\u201d as the theater describes it, played out over two days in a pub filled with dramatic tension among Harry\u2019s friends, family, his disgruntled assistant, journalists and the menacing stranger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMcDonagh\u2019s talent for bringing a group of people together, putting them in a situation that guarantees tension and letting it play out with humor, tragedy and plenty of unexpected twists and turns is on full display,\u201d Gray said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Director Carl daSilva \u2014 who had also directed \u201cThe Pillowman\u201d at the Playhouse two years ago \u2014 said \u201cHangmen\u201d is \u201cstrikingly relevant\u201d for us today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho has the authority to decide guilt?\u201d he says the play asks. \u201cHow much faith should we place in systems that are created and maintained by flawed human beings? And what happens to those whose identities are built upon institutions that no longer exist?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The play\u2019s cast includes recognizable actors from previous Playhouse shows, most notably Noah Wagner and Amanda Karr, who each shined in the theater\u2019s stellar \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lbpost.com\/esd\/eat-see-do-2\/see\/theater-review-the-lion-in-winter-a-catty-play-about-dysfunctional-royals-roars-at-long-beach-playhouse\/\">The Lion in Winter<\/a>\u201d earlier this summer, along with Trevor Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c&#8217;Hangmen\u2019 is a perfect show for closing out the summer season,\u201d Mooney said. \u201cAudiences will laugh, gasp and find themselves thinking about it long after they leave the theater.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cHangmen\u201d runs from Aug. 29 to Sept. 26 at the Long Beach Playhouse Studio Theatre, 5021 E.
