California Repertory or Cal Rep<\/a>\u2019s latest season of student productions launches today with Branden Jacobs-Jenkins dark comedy \u201cEverybody\u201d \u2014 adapted from the medieval morality play \u201cEveryman\u201d \u2014 in which someone named Everybody dies and is asked by God to account for their life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Written anonymously in the early 1500s, \u201cEveryman\u201d \u2014 one of the first recorded plays in the English language \u2014 uses allegory to personify characters such as Everyman (representing all of us) and Death to make a point about Catholic salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jacobs-Jenkins\u2019 adaptation, a Pulitzer Prize finalist<\/a> for drama in 2018, modernizes the play while keeping its essential tale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the play also requires its nine cast members to be prepared to essentially draw straws before each show to see who will play the lead role for that performance \u2014 underscoring the idea that Everybody could be any of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe title role is chosen by chance at each performance, sending a different performer into the unknown every night,\u201d Cal Rep\u2019s website states. \u201c\u2018Everybody\u2019 asks the question waiting for us all: when everything else falls away, what remains?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cal Rep representative Drew Kelly calls the play \u201cunabashedly theatrical\u201d in asking questions about love, identity and life while balancing absurdity and humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Directed by Angie Scott, Cal Rep recommends the play for ages 12 and up due to its strong language and profanity, mature themes of death and dying, and partial nudity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The producing arm of CSULB\u2019s Theater Department, Cal Rep, has been staging new works and adapting classics since 1989.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also mark your calendars for Cal Rep\u2019s later fall productions: \u201cAnti-Hero: Revenge of the Sw*fties\u201d opening Oct. 16, a \u201cpop-fueled theatrical ride,\u201d according to its website; H.G. Wells\u2019 iconic \u201cThe War of the Worlds\u201d opening Nov. 6; and Moli\u00e8re\u2019s 17th-century comedy \u201cThe Miser,\u201d opening Nov. 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

California Repertory\u2019s \u201cEverybody\u201d runs Thursday, Sept. 24 through Saturday, Sept. 26 and Wednesday, Sept. 30 through Friday Oct. 2. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. at CSULB\u2019s University Theatre near the intersection of E. Seventh St. and E. Campus Dr., with the closest parking at lot<\/em> E8<\/em><\/a>.
