After nearly 30 years as the central pub of the Belmont and Bluff Heights neighborhoods, E.J. Malloy’s announced it will close its flagship brick-and-mortar.

E.J. Malloy’s made the announcement formally on its Instagram after a notice of application change appeared on its window nearly a month ago advertising that The Firkin Pub & Grill is set to take over the Belmont Heights space.

The Irish-meets-American sports pub opened in 1992 after it replaced another bar that was around for three decades, Karl’s Little Bavaria, a long-forgotten pub of the past along the eastern edge of the Broadway corridor. (The owners of Karl’s eventually moved into Naples with Anneliese’s Bavarian Inn.)

With its opening, E.J. Malloy’s brought a new sense of business to the strip of shops that helped define the neighborhood—and the Firkin hopes to do the same. The successor, which will be keeping the E.J. Malloy’s staff and cooks on hand for the transition, announced its plans on its own social media:

Our dear friends and owners of E.J. Malloy’s are moving out of state, but we will keep the torch going! We are keeping the same warm, neighborhood pub feel, the awesome staff are all remaining with us thankfully, and the amazing cooks are excited to try out some new menu items!

While the pub’s Los Altos location at 5506 E Britton Drive, and Bixby Knolls location at 4306 Atlantic Ave.,  will remain open, the last day to experience the OG location will be on on Sunday, July 29, with patrons invited to honor the departure on July 27, 28 and 29.

E.J. Malloy’s is located at 3411 E. Broadway in Long Beach.
