Given that Monday began the first full week of being required to wear a face mask, we asked several people very familiar with the making and maintenance of the coverings to join us for a LiveChat.
Shawna Epps and Dionah Austgen run Shine Your Heart Healing, a yoga and meditation studio that has pivoted to making masks for sale, first locally, now across the country. Carole Frances Lung, a textile artist well-acquainted with the production side of the fashion industry—an industry she sharply scrutinizes as her alter ego, Frau Fiber—has been asked to make masks for local shelters and recently showed folks how to make their own in a “How To” video posted on the Hi-lo.

They joined the Hi-lo’s Steve Lowery and Asia Morris to talk about making and buying masks, washing and drying masks, eyeglass fogging, price gouging and the inevitable fashion statement these things are to become. Actually, it’s already happening. (FYI, technology being technology, this one begins a little rough, but everything clears up and gets rolling around the 2:30 mark.)
Besides Shawna and Dionah’s designs, you can also check out multiple mask manufacturers at the Long Beach Post marketplace site by clicking here.
