Numismatic, for those unfamiliar with the adjective, sounds like it could describe one of The Jetsons’ many futuristic devices. However, those deeply invested in numismatics, the study or collection of currency, as in coins, tokens, paper money and sometimes medals, are surely already gearing up for The Long Beach Coin, Currency, Stamp and Sports Collectible Show happening September 4 through 6 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center.
Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, this year’s expo boasts several historical items of immense worth, whether measuring monetarily or nostalgically, or both. Check out, for example, a 1927 gold coin from a collection of early 20th Century U.S. currency dubbed “Double Eagles.” The coin just recently sold at auction for nearly $1.3M and will be displayed to the public for the first time at the Long Beach Expo.
Catch a rare glimpse of history rock ‘n’ roll history, as the contract signed by Vee Jay Records, INC. and The Beatles, their first recording contract in the U.S. [pictured below], will also be on display. The 1963 contract gave the record company the right to distribute all of The Beatles’ records for five years, however, Vee Jay Records INC., broke the terms of agreement by not paying the world-renowned band. The contract was then breached and picked up by Capitol Records.
Baseball fans will get a chance to see and hold the 1932 Babe Ruth bat from 11:00AM to 2:00PM, Thursday through Saturday. The other fifty-plus items on display at the Babe Ruth collectibles booth will include a 1927 cancelled check, a personalized photo to Joe DiMaggio and a 1915 Boston Red Sox panoramic team photo.

The Long Beach Coin, Stamp and Collectible Expo is a family affair. Bring your kids to check out the Willy Wonka movie display, featuring the original golden ticket used in Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, as well as the top hat and the hero golden egg. Revel in the otherworldly strength of the original superman costume, worn by the very first Superman, Christopher Reeve, in 1978. Just don’t get too close to the Kryptonite or you might not have enough energy for the kids’ treasure hunt, set to take place on Saturday from 11:00AM to 2:00PM.
The Long Beach Stamp Club Kids Korner, a program established by the Long Beach Stamp Club to encourage kids to take interest in stamp collection as a hobby, will be giving away stamps to kid ages 6-17 from its “stamp drawer.” A starter collection will also be up for grabs through a raffle, giving one young collector a chance to add to his or her treasured collection.
Services provided at the expo include autograph authentication by PSA/DNA at Booth #1540. Bring along anything you have signed and have it authorized as a genuine signature. The PCGS will offer a free evaluation of the condition, value and grade of your coin collection, featuring world-renowned coin expert David Hall.
