The following is a curated roundup of weekend events in Long Beach published every Wednesday on the Hi-lo/Long Beach Post. Have an event to share? Email [email protected] with “Things to Do” in the subject line.

This weekend is all about challenging stereotypes. From a movie screening of a film all about men who own cats (and aren’t afraid to admit it) to a play based on a classic drama that rocked the 19th century for breaking gender roles.

Plus, we’ve found a silent disco that encourages mindful thinking and intention setting and a community bike ride that’s all about making evening bike rides a fun, safe experience in Long Beach.

“A DOLLS HOUSE, PART 2” – INTERNATIONAL CITY THEATRE (Wednesday – Saturday)

International City Theatre has just launched showings for its newest production, “A Doll’s House, Part 2” this week with performances Thursday through Sunday until May 1. But on Wednesday and Thursday, April 13 and 14, ICT is offering discount tickets for “preview” showings at $37.

The play is a sequel of sorts to Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 landmark drama “A Doll’s House” about a woman by the name of Nora who decides to leave her husband and young children in a quest of self-discovery—at the time a very controversial play.

In “A Dolls House, Part 2,” playwright Lucas Hnath imagines what it would be like for Nora to visit her estranged husband 15 years later as a smart and self-assured person. Hnath envisioned the reunion as a comedy, and his smart take on the serious play was a hit, landing its debut on Broadway in 2017. But the show promises more than just laughs and explores the ways that women’s roles have and haven’t changed in the years since Isben’s original play debuted.

ICT’s production stars actors Jennifer Shelton as Nora and Scott Roberts as Nora’s ex-husband, Torivald, both are seasoned actors with the theater company. The show is directed by Trevor Biship-Gillespie, whose work has also been produced with South Coast Repertory theater company in Orange County. Click here to purchase tickets.

International City Theatre is at 330 E. Seaside Way.

ASI FUI “GOLD” ALBUM RELEASE SHOW – ALEX’S BAR (Saturday)

Local atmospheric rock band Asi Fui has spent the last few years leading up to their newest album release “Gold” experimenting, recording, and playing with innovative ways to write and arrange their music. Part of their new feel is thanks to the addition of a new band member on guitar, Vince Mazza. But also, Asi Fui was forced to take a step back from their work and plans to release “Gold” in 2020 due to that devastating virus that nearly upended the music industry for a while. You know the one. But, the silver lining was that they now had the space (and time) to delve deep and further mature their sound.

The new four-track EP will be released on all streaming platforms April 16. To celebrate this new milestone for the band, Asi Fui will be playing an album release show at Alex’s Bar Saturday, April 16. During that show, attendees can hear the new album live in addition to a variety of new, unrecorded material Asi Fui has been brewing. Also on the lineup is electronic trio Fartbarf and local bands Chapis, Slice and DJ Rad Wolf.

Tickets for the show are $19.32 (tax and fees included) and may be purchased online, click here. If you’d like to support Asi Fui, pre-order digital sales of “Gold” are available online.

Alex’s Bar is at 2913 E. Anaheim St.

In 2020, documentary filmmaker Mye Hoang set about the task of documenting a cultural shift she had noticed among men. That men, in actuality, loved cats more than they let on and that those who owned them weren’t as strange as stereotypes might portray them.

In her documentary “Cat Daddies,” viewers delve into the lives of eight men who love cats and whose lives have been changed for the better by their feline companions.

The film will be screened for one day only at the Art Theatre Saturday, April 16 in Retro Row. Show starts at 10:30 a.m. Tickets cost $20, click here to purchase. Read more about the documentary, here.

The Art Theatre of Long Beach is at 2025 E. Fourth St.

If you fancy an evening bike ride that feels safe and fun, consider joining fellow bicyclists during the Moonlight Mash Saturday, April 16 for a bike ride in Downtown and happens every month in tandem with the full moon.

The ride is also a bit of a costume party, where goers are encouraged to dress up in a specific theme. This month’s theme is all about sports, so riders are encouraged to dress up as gymnasts, swimmers, football players, or Olympic athletes—you get the idea. You can still partake in the ride without a costume, though, and it’s free to attend.

Organizers just require that riders wear bike lights and helmets. Meet-up is at 7:30 p.m. at Pedal Movement. Ride-out is at 8 p.m. sharp. Bike ride ends at Shannon’s on Pine. Click here for more information.

Pedal Movement is at 223 E. First St.

MEDITATION AND SILENT DISCO – BLUFF PARK (Sunday)

Local DJ Katrina Essence is teaming up with yoga and meditation instructor T LeSure in a two-hour event that will be both a guided meditation and silent disco—the ones where you listen to music through headphones instead of music blaring through speakers.

Guests are encouraged to bring yoga mats and water. It’s unclear if headphones will be provided, but if you’ve got headphones capable of connecting to Bluetooth, that’ll be the way to go.

Tickets cost $22 and can be purchased online, click here. Click here for more info on the event.

Bluff Park is at 2100 E. Ocean Blvd.
