Yesterday, the LGBTQ Center Long Beach announced its co-hosting of a rally to take place at 5:30PM on the day the Supreme Court announces its expected ruling on gay marriage, to take place between today and June 30, at the Long Beach Civic Center Plaza outside City Hall.

The event will be hosted in conjunction with the Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club and the Human Rights Campaign chapter and will take place irrespective of the court’s ruling.

“This rally will take place no matter how SCOTUS rules,” said Porter Gilberg, executive director of The LGBTQ Center Long Beach. “We are hosting an event open to everyone in order to come together as a community no matter what the outcome. It’s what we’ve always done and will continue to do as one of the most diverse and tight-knit cities in America.”

Local leaders will kick off the rally with their thoughts on the impact of the ruling on the LGBTQ population nationwide, along with lawyers presenting legal analyses of the ruling’s impact.

Gilberg said the rally was especially reflective of Long Beach.

“We have one of the most vibrant and dynamic LGBTQ communities in the country right here in Long Beach,” Gilberg said, noting that Long Beach’s LGBTQ activism goes back decades, predating the Proposition 8 campaign. “When something happens locally or nationally that impacts LGBTQ people and communities Long Beach is always part of that conversation and response. The upcoming Supreme Court decision is no different.”
