Viral Video Showing Rat Inside Long Beach Burger Joint this Week Not Part of Infestation, Health Officials Say • Long Beach Post

A viral video showing a rat inside a burger joint in the city’s Eastside area posted midweek by a Long Beach resident prompted a health inspection that resulted in no evidence of any type of current infestation, according to city health officials.

Footage of the rat on a counter at a Tommy’s Original hamburger restaurant, at 4315 East Anaheim Street, was posted on Facebook by Estilo Juan Estrada on Wednesday, August 16.

Estrada said in the post that he was riding home when he pulled over at a 7-Eleven store to get a drink when he noticed something moving at the nearby Tommy’s. That post has been shared over 20,000 times as of Friday.

Health officials were first made aware of the video when it was brought to their attention by the Post Wednesday night.

Nelson Kerr, the city’s environmental health bureau manager, said Friday morning that an Environmental Health program supervisor and health inspector went to the restaurant on Thursday to take a look before it opened but found no evidence of any type of current infestation.

“We did audit their pest control records and they do have a reputable pest control operator that services them every month just preventatively, and they did have their pest control operator out there the day before the posting,” Kerr told the Post.

Health inspectors also did a routine inspection but did not find any serious violations, just a couple of minor corrections, allowing them to remain open to the public, according to Kerr.

The pest control operator will still be going to the restaurant every day to monitor it until health officials are satisfied there is no infestation, Kerr added.

He believes the rat could have possibly entered the establishment during a delivery and possibly scurried back out.

“Our inspection did not reveal any infestation and the owners were very cooperative as was their pest control operator,” Kerr said. “We are all working together to make sure this is not a situation that will impact the public’s health.”
