For developer and builder Jan van Dijs–and echoed visually through the lens of photographer Lindsey Ingram–the phase that the Psychic Temple building on Broadway is in epitomizes Long Beach in a philosophical sense.

“Right now, [the building] is a physical manifestation of Long Beach’s changing facade,” said van Dijs. “There’s an element of history and an element of the future.”

That history–it was once everything from a cult headquarter to a brothel, a flophouse to a speakeasy–comes through these stunning photographs that show mid-construction how vastly altered the building will eventually become while clinging to hints of what it was.

The building, situated at 224 E. Broadway just slightly east of the Promenade, is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
