The City of Long Beach is inviting the public to two upcoming meetings regarding increased financial incentives for restoring historic properties as part of an expansion of the Mills Act Property Tax Abatement Program, the city announced Monday.
A pre-application workshop will be held Saturday, June 27 and an application workshop will be held Saturday, July 11 as part of a city outreach effort aimed at educating the public about tax relief opportunities for properly restored and maintained homes.
“Reinstating this important program will help to protect the city’s historic sites, and provide property owners with substantial savings each year,” said Mayor Robert Garcia in a statement. “This significant effort reflects our strong commitment to historic preservation and dedication to upholding the rich heritage of Long Beach.”
The Mills Act is a state program implemented by local municipalities offering tax relief in exchange for proper maintenance and restoration on an evolving 10-year term.
The City Council approved a measure to expand financial incentives for historic property owners on January 6 of this year after implementation of the act lay inactive since 2006. Currently, 34 properties are in Mills Act contracts with Long Beach.
