The counties are coming to the LBC this week, Long Beachers.

And beyond the appearances of elected officials famous for their county-level politics converging in the city from across the nation, the national convention will also feature the likes of world-class b-baller Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, record-breaking swimmer, sports broadcaster and author Diana Nyad, Esri co-founder Jack Dangermond and Pulitzer Prize-winner Jon Meacham.

“We are thrilled to welcome the National Association of Counties and local leaders from across the country to the largest county in the nation,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe of the event in a statement, which serves as one of the last such gatherings he’ll be a part of. “Hosting this annual conference is an incredible opportunity for the city of Long Beach and with nearly 3,000 attendees it will be one of the largest conferences ever held in the city.”

Those thousands of attendees will flock to the Long Beach Convention Center July 22 to 25, a release noted.

Knabe mentioned the event in his State of the County speech last November, which was one of the last addresses he would give in his career as a county supervisor, which began in 1996. Knabe will close his final term this year.

The event will focus on a range of issues affecting residents in both urban and rural communities, including healthcare, child sex trafficking, jails and the opioid epidemic, as well as the economy, the release stated.

Other attractions of the conference will include general sessions, workshops and meetings. Participants are encouraged to contribute to a community project for Saving Innocence, a Los Angeles nonprofit partner working to fight against child sex slavery in the region.

On-site attendance is around $650, so expect to drop some dough. For more information on the event, as well as tickets, click here
