A change in vendor operations will render the state’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) System inoperable for EBT cardholders wanting to make cash withdrawals or food purchases next weekend, according to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS).

The 24-hour shutdown will take place from 11:00PM on Saturday, June 23 to 11:01PM on Sunday, June 24. EBT cardholders are encouraged to withdraw funds prior to the event.

“DPSS customers use the state-issued card to receive CalFresh food assistance and cash benefits,” county officials said. “For many in the county, CalFresh serves as the first line of defense against food insecurity.”

The Florida-based Fidelity Information Services (FIS) will replace Conduent (formerly Xerox) as the operator of the EBT card services, according to officials.

“The decision to switch was made to improve the current card system, offering more surcharge-free ATMs and point-of-sale markets to utilize EBT benefits,” the release stated. “FIS has also committed to providing free, unlimited in-network cash withdrawals and balance inquiries.”
