Three Long Beach firefighters were hospitalized Sunday and two families displaced following a heavy apartment fire that shot flames out of windows on a second floor unit in Alamitos Beach, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to the two-story apartment fire at 10:50AM on Sunday, July 24 on East Broadway at Cerritos Avenue, according to a release from the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD).

Arriving firefighters noticed heavy fire showing from a unit on the second floor, which was located over a business, the release stated.

“A second alarm response was immediately called due to the size of the building, the fire conditions, and the potential for life loss,” stated fire officials.

Firefighters knocked down the fire in about 10 minutes. A total of 49 firefighters responded to the scene, fire officials stated.

The blaze left a unit with heavy fire damage and three neighboring units damaged by heavy smoke, officials stated. The business below the apartment unit on fire was also closed due to water damage.

No civilians were reportedly injured, but fire officials said three firefighters were transported to local hospitals due to heat exhaustion. The trio was able to make a full recovery, said LBFD spokesman Mark Miller in an email.

The fire displaced two families, though the total number of people and their ages was not known, Miller said.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.
